"Engaging migrants in e-consultations: a way to recognize their political rights and identity", in Angelini A. (2011) (a cura di), Migrants, Cultural…
2011
This chapter reflects on the role of the new media – the Internet and mobile communications – in facilitating alternative forms of public participation that involve citizens and migrants in the policy making. "Intecity": esempi di trasformazione degli spazi in un quartiere del centro storico di Palermo
2012
The presence and the integration of migrants in the cities, leads to the articulation of new forms of urban life. By an empirical research conducted in 2007 in a suburb of the historical centre of Palermo, Palazzo Reale, the cognitive question that we posed to ourselves, was to observe whether the presence of migrants in an urban area traditionally “marginal” has triggered off a transformation in its structure and in the structure of the relationship between these spaces.
Migration Discourse and the New Socially Constructed Meanings of the English Lingua Franca
2022
After the 1990s, the mass arrival of immigrants in Europe transformed the phenomenon of migration from a benefit into a problem and opened the debate to issues of first aid, security, expulsion and rejection. Even today, migrants are no longer seen as a socio-economic resource to be protected and regulated, but as a potential social problem affecting areas such as the economy, health and national security. The paper deals with the linguistically relevant literature about migration discourse (MD) and the role of English as lingua franca in public discourse related to the migration phenomenon. The latter part examines some traditional English key terms used to represent migrants since their m…
The migrant crisis in the Mediterranean Sea: Empirical evidence on policy interventions
2021
Abstract This paper presents a novel set of empirical evidence to explore several hypotheses regarding the migrant crisis in the Mediterranean Sea. The political instability in transit countries, such as Libya, that made pre-existent repatriation policies ineffective, called for several search-and-rescue operations in the Mediterranean, which in turn have been wrongly accused of fostering illegal immigration and increasing deaths at sea. The empirical results show that the main determinants of the departures are several root causes at the departing African countries, underlining the importance of fighting human smuggling networks. The paper suggests a change in migration studies’ perspectiv…
Public Services and Migrant Minors in Italy. Redefining skill for social work.
2015
The increased presence of foreign minors in Italy demands the country to rethink and undertake a general reorganization of public social services, still responding more to emergency situations rather than promoting preventive interventions. The analysis of laws and policies on migrant integration shows how the increasing presence of migrant families with minors requires, first of all, a change in the legislative system. Moreover, the urgency for a significant investment in the training of social workers is felt, in particular on the methodologies used and the intercultural competencies required for the analyses of needs and the planning of interventions. In brief, a reorganization of welfar…

La relazione a distanza: le famiglie transnazionali
2013
In Italy female migration processes meet a growing demand for domestic work and eldercare. Migrant women more often leave their children to the care of substitute caregiver in their country of origin in order to take care of other people in the new country. The economic reason for these career choices are at the origin of the formation of transnational families, characterized by a long-distance relationship, in particular the mother-children one. The increasing number of transnational families has caused growing interest in this topic in international literature. The following paper copes with a key question: to what extent, and under which conditions, can relationships of “proximity at dis…
The essay analyses the recent Italian constitutional court ruling (no. 19/2022), that deems constitutional social security law, which subordinates the granting of minimum income guaranteed to the ownership of permanent residence permit for non-EU citizens.

Ancient DNA Reveals Key Stages in the Formation of Central European Mitochondrial Genetic Diversity
2013
The Origins of Europeans To investigate the genetic origins of modern Europeans, Brandt et al. (p. 257 ) examined ancient mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and were able to identify genetic differences in 364 Central Europeans spanning the early Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age. Observed changes in mitochondrial haplotypes corresponded with hypothesized human migration across Eurasia and revealed the complexity of the demographic changes and evidence of a Late Neolithic origin for the European mtDNA gene pool. This transect through time reveals four key population events associated with well-known archaeological cultures, which involved genetic influx into Central Europe from various directions at…
