Molecular Surveillance of HIV-1 in Madrid, Spain: a Phylogeographic Analysis ▿
2011
ABSTRACT The molecular epidemiology of HIV-1 is constantly changing, mainly as a result of human migratory flows and the high adaptive ability of the virus. In recent years, Spain has become one of Europe's main destinations for immigrants and one of the western European countries with the highest rates of HIV-positive patients. Using a phylogeographic approach, we have analyzed the relationship between HIV-1 variants detected in immigrant and native populations of the urban area of Madrid. Our project was based on two coincidental facts. First, resistance tests were extended to naïve and newly diagnosed patients, and second, the Spanish government legislated the provision of legal status t…

Aim of this paper is to give health care professionals information on HBV and HCV infections amongst migrants, drug users and prison inmates. The manuscript is an official Position Paper on behalf of the following Scientific Societies: Italian Association for the Study of the Liver (A.I.S.F.), Italian Society of In…
Mediju lietojuma izmaiņas nepazīstamā vidē: imigrantu un apmaiņas studentu pieredzes un vajadzību salīdzinājums
2016
“Throwing into the Whirlwind Vortex”: Unaccounted Memoirs about Blok by S. Korenev
2021
The article examines certain plots of the “Blok theme” in the 1920s Riga periodicals, which had not previously attracted the attention of researchers. The Russian press of independent Latvia (1919 –1940) has preserved many tens, if not hundreds, of articles, correspondences, documents, poetic texts dedicated to A.A. Blok’s personality and works. Among them are memoirs of people who were familiar with the poet, met with him, listened to his speeches. However, most of these scattered memoirs remain forgotten and are not taken into account in the Blok studies. The author recalls the texts of V.V. Tretyakov, A.M. Perfiliev and republishes from the Riga newspaper “Slovo” a memorial article about…

Covid-19 and Inequalities. Protecting Human Rights of Migrants in a Time of Pandemic
2020
By focusing on the Italian context, this article explores the human rights violations that migrants systematically experience and that the current health crisis is unveiling and, in turn, producing. In particular, we look at these dynamics by taking into account four issues/dimensions: the access to essential services and benefits, such as food vouchers; working and living conditions; conditions in reception and detention centres; and the denial of entry to reach ports of safety.

Stepping up to strike: a union mobilization case study of Polish migrant workers in the Netherlands
2015
This article examines a union mobilization of Polish temporary agency workers in the Netherlands. The case study contributes to the migrant organizing literature a micro-level account of the dynamics of mobilization from the viewpoint of the migrants and organizers involved. The findings emphasize the importance of key actors in building solidarities within and between different groups of workers in fragmented workplaces, with implications for unions seeking new ways to respond to changing employment practices. This study highlights some of the possibilities and limitations of organizing among contractually fragmented workforces.
