Colonisation process of vegetative fragments of Posidonia oceanica (L.) Delile on rubble mounds

2005

Seagrass colonise new areas via the dispersion of seeds or vegetative fragments. Independent of the manner of colonization, habitat requirements need to be met for the successful establishment of seagrasses. Here we report on the colonization process of Posidonia oceanica in a highly disturbed area: a gas pipeline trench at Capo Feto (SW Sicily, Italy). A trench dredged through a P. oceanica bed was back-filled with rubble added from dump barges leading to the formation of a series of rubble mounds on the seabed. Over time, these mounds became colonised with P. oceanica. In order to understand the pattern of P. oceanica colonization, shoot density was quantified over 3 years (2001-2003) on …

A theoretically-based overland flow resistance law for upland grassland habitats

2022

Abstract Sediments conveyed from interrill areas to rills are transported by a thin flow (overland flow) and the knowledge of overland flow resistance is useful to evaluate overland flow velocity and sediment transport capacity. The aim of this paper was to verify the applicability of a theoretical overland flow resistance law, based on a power-velocity distribution, using field measurements for four upland grassland types used in different management strategies (Hay Meadows, Low-density Grazing, Rushes and Rank Grassland). Particular attention was deserved to the effects of vegetation growth cycles on the surface roughness and the corresponding reduction of overland flow velocity. The rela…

Iterative Symmetry Detection: Shrinking vs. Decimating Patterns

2005

This paper introduces a new mechanism that consists of applying a symmetry operator on an iteratively transformed version of the input image. The nature of the transformation characterizes the operator. Here, we consider the Object Symmetry Transform combined with the morphological operator erosion and the pyramid decimation respectively. The derived operators have been applied on both binary and gray levels images, comparing their ability to grasp the internal structure of a digital object. We present some experiments to evaluate their performances and check them for result quality versus computing complexity.

C4 plant isotopic composition (delta13C) evidence for urban CO2 pollution in the city of Cotonou, Benin (West Africa).

2006

9 pages; International audience; The carbon isotopic composition (delta13C) of plants can reveal the isotopic carbon content of the atmosphere in which they develop. The delta13C values of air and plants depend on the amount of atmospheric fossil fuel CO2, which is chiefly emitted in urban areas. A new indicator of CO2 pollution is tested using the delta13C variation in a C4 grass: Eleusine indica. A range of about 4 per thousand delta units was observed at different sites in Cotonou, the largest city in the Republic of Benin. The highest delta13C values, from -12 per thousand to -14 per thousand, were found in low traffic zones; low delta13C values, from -14 per thousand to -16 per thousan…

Mode of Delivery and the Effectiveness of Foreign Aid: The Example of Missionary Work

2010

Conventional development aid, typically a service from government to government, has been a relatively poor determinant of economic growth or human development in developing countries. In this paper we test whether a distinctly grass-roots delivery mode, as is the case with missionary work, leads to a more effective dispersion of foreign aid. In addition to its mode of delivery, missionary work is also of interest as there is a known positive correlation between the growth rate of Christianity and economic development. We estimate the economic growth impacts of development aid versus missionary work variables by using empirical data from 119 countries and discuss several explanations for ou…

Classification of n-dimensional subvarieties of G(1, 2n) that can be projected to G(1, n + 1)

2005

A structure theorem is given for n-dimensional smooth subvarieties of the Grassmannian G(1, N); with N >= n + 3, that can be isomorphically projected to G(1, n + 1). A complete classification in the cases N = 2n + 1 and N = 2n follows, as a corollary.

Branch and bound for the cutwidth minimization problem

2013

The cutwidth minimization problem consists of finding a linear arrangement of the vertices of a graph where the maximum number of cuts between the edges of the graph and a line separating consecutive vertices is minimized. We first review previous approaches for special classes of graphs, followed by lower bounds and then a linear integer formulation for the general problem. We then propose a branch-and-bound algorithm based on different lower bounds on the cutwidth of partial solutions. Additionally, we introduce a Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure (GRASP) heuristic to obtain good initial solutions. The combination of the branch-and-bound and GRASP methods results in optimal solu…

Polynomial identities with involution, superinvolutions and the Grassmann envelope

2017

Let A be an algebra with involution ∗ over a field of characteristic zero. We prove that in case A satisfies a non-trivial ∗-identity, then A has the same ∗-identities as the Grassmann envelope of a finite dimensional superalgebra with superinvolution. As a consequence we give a positive answer to the Specht problem for algebras with involution, i.e., any T-ideal of identities of an algebra with involution is finitely generated as a T-ideal.
