Glucocorticoids in Graves’ orbitopathy: mechanisms of action and clinical application
2020
Background:Graves’ orbitopathy (GO) is the most frequent extrathyroidal manifestation of the autoimmune Graves’ disease. GO significantly impacts quality of life and has a psycho-social morbidity. Inflammation and swelling of the orbital tissue often leads to proptosis, diplopia, and decrease of visual acuity. Due to the inflammatory background of the disease, glucocorticoids (GC) have been used as a first-line treatment for decades. Methods:PubMed and MeSH database were searched for original articles, clinical trials, reviews, and meta-analyses published between 1 January 2000 and 31 March 2020 and pertaining to both the mechanism of action and immunological effects of GC as well as to the …
From Buildings' End of Life to Aggregate Recycling under a Circular Economic Perspective: A Comparative Life Cycle Assessment Case Study
2021
The demolition of buildings, apart from being energy intensive and disruptive, inevitably produces construction and demolition waste (C&Dw). Unfortunately, even today, the majority of this waste ends up underexploited and not considered as valuable resources to be re-circulated into a closed/open loop process under the umbrella of circular economy (CE). Considering the amount of virgin aggregates needed in civil engineering applications, C&Dw can act as sustainable catalyst towards the preservation of natural resources and the shift towards a CE. This study completes current research by presenting a life cycle inventory compilation and life cycle assessment case study of two buildin…

Future Research in Graves' Orbitopathy: From Priority Setting to Trial Design Through Patient and Public Involvement
2015
Graves' orbitopathy (GO) is a disfiguring autoimmune condition, which can sometimes cause blindness (1). The disease has profound effects on quality of life (2), psychological health (3), and socioeconomic status (4). Progress in understanding and treating this disease has been slow. However, recent advances include delineation of plausible immunological mechanisms (5), development of an animal model (6), and publication of randomized studies defining the role and limitations of intravenous steroids (7), rituximab (8,9), and selenium (10). Yet, some of this knowledge remains to be translated into improvement in clinical care. Access of patients to specialist treatments is patchy and seems t…

Assessing theoretical flow velocity profile and resistance in gravel bed rivers by field measurements
2018
Previous studies showed that integrating a power velocity profile, deduced applying dimensional analysis and the incomplete self-similarity condition, the flow resistance equation for open channel flow can be obtained. At first, in this paper the relationship between the Gamma function of the power velocity profile, the channel slope and the Froude number, which was already empirically introduced in a previous paper, is now theoretically deduced. Then this relationship is calibrated using the field measurements of flow velocity, water depth and bed slope carried out in 101 reaches of gravel bed rivers available by literature. The proposed relationship for estimating Gamma function and the t…
