Investigation of characterizing methods for the microstructure of cement

Volumetric, gravimetric, calorimetric, flow methods, mercury porosimetry and laser granulometry were used to investigate the surface structure and the sorption behavior of industrial cements and hydrated cement paste. The suitability of the measuring methods is assessed.

Thermal analyses of commercial magnesium stearate pseudopolymorphs

Abstract Two commercial magnesium stearate powders in two well-characterised structural states are investigated using DSC and coupled TGA–DTA under dry nitrogen flow. They consist of either a mixture of crystalline hydrates or a poorly crystallised so-called anhydrate. Following the degassing of unbound water, 1 or 3 weight-loss peaks are observed below about 100 °C, each associated with one heat loss peak at the same temperature. The present results and a review of graphical data from literature show that the so-called anhydrate always contains a significant amount of water. A New Simple Static Method for the Determination of Solubilities of Condensed Compounds in Supercritical Fluids

Abstract A simple static method based on gravimetric measurements has been adopted to measure the solubility of benzenecarboxylic acid, 2-hydroxy-benzenecarboxylic acid, 4-hydroxy-benzenecarboxylic acid and 1,8-dihydroxyanthraquinone along several isotherms in the temperature range 318–357 K and the pressure interval 7–23 MPa. Solubility data have been correlated with the Zieger–Eckert approach, using the Fedor atomic and group contribution method to estimate the solubility parameter and the molar volume of the solutes. Pb(II) adsorption by a novel activated carbon - alginate composite material. A kinetic and equilibrium study.

The adsorption capacity of an activated carbon – calcium alginate composite material (ACAA-Ca) has been tested with the aim of developing a new and more efficient adsorbent material to remove Pb(II) ion from aqueous solution. The study was carried out at pH = 5, in NaCl medium and in the ionic strength range 0.1–0.75 mol L−1. Differential Pulse Anodic Stripping Voltammetry (DP-ASV) technique was used to check the amount of Pb(II) ion removed during kinetic and equilibrium experiments. The Role of Covalent Functionalization in the Thermal Stability and Decomposition of Hybrid Layered Hydroxides

The room temperature synthesis of two Co-based hybrid layered hydroxides containing the same organic ligand (suberate [Sub]), one connected through purely electrostatic interactions (CoAl layered double hydroxide [LDH]), and the other covalently functionalized (α-CoII simonkolleite phase) has been carried out. Extension of the Applicability of Jäntti's Method to the Fast Calculation of Desorption Data

The time for sorption measurements may be reduced substantially by measuring several values at short time intervals at the beginning of a kinetic curve and extrapolating them to the equilibrium value. The method used by Jäntti for simple adsorption processes has been extended to complicated processes described by a second-order differential equation. A simulated example is provided.

Selective guest inclusion of linear C6 hydrocarbons in a Zn(ii) 1D coordination polymer

Trapping of volatile unbranched C6 hydrocarbons (hexane, 1-hexene, and 1-hexyne) in a 1D coordination polymer is reported. The guest inclusion was studied quantitatively by 1H-NMR analysis and thermogravimetric measurements, while synchrotron single-crystal diffraction data allowed advancing the view of their confinement into linear CP channels. Adsorption experiments performed through solid/vapour processes on microcrystals of CP 1 showed a certain degree of selectivity for 1-hexyne, which could be rationalized by its larger dipole moment.

Structure analysis of titanate nanorods by automated electron diffraction tomography

A hitherto unknown phase of sodium titanate, NaTi3O6(OH)·2H2O, was identified as the intermediate species in the synthesis of TiO2 nanorods. This new phase, prepared as nanorods, was investigated by electron diffraction, X-ray powder diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy. The structure was determined ab initio using electron diffraction data collected by the recently developed automated diffraction tomography technique. NaTi3O6(OH)·2H2O crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/m. Corrugated layers of corner- and edge-sharing distorted TiO6 octahedra are intercalated with Na+ and water of crystallization.
