The Influence of Industrial Waste on the Magnetic Properties of Salt-Affected Soils from Two Soda Ash Manufacturing Sites

2021

The aim of this study was to characterize the impact of soda ash manufacturing on the magnetic properties of soils located in the agricultural landscape in north-central Poland. Two study sites were chosen: Mątwy (SM) and Janikowo (SJ). Highly saline soils with halophyte communities were selected in order to develop an understanding of the relationship between salinization of water–soil interface and the potential contamination risk of the environment. Basic chemical and physicochemical properties of topsoil (0–25 cm) and water (surface and groundwater) samples from five locations were characterized. The characteristics of soil contamination were based on the content of sel…

The effect of spatial and temporal scale on camouflage in North African rodents

2022

Abstract Background matching, a common form of camouflage, is a widespread anti-predator adaptation that hinders detection or recognition by increasing the resemblance of prey to its environment. However, the natural environment is complex and both spatially and temporally variable, which constrains effective background matching as an anti-predator strategy. Here, using remote sensing data (publicly available satellite imagery), we investigated how variation of habitat parameters predicts background matching in 16 Sahara–Sahel rodent species across spatial and temporal scales. All fur colour parameters (hue, saturation and brightness) strongly matched the respective habitats of the differen…

Use of peat-based sorbents for removal of arsenic compounds

2013

Abstract It is important to apply sorbent materials for purification of water from arsenic contamination due to serious arsenic pollution worldwide. We have developed new sorbents based on natural materials that provide a cheap and environmentally friendly alternative. For the first time, peat modified with iron compounds and iron humates were tested for sorption of arsenic compounds. The highest sorption capacity was found in peat modified with iron compounds. We have found that sorption of different arsenic speciation forms was strongly dependent on solution pH, reaction time and temperature. Calculations of the sorption process using thermodynamic parameters indicate the spontaneity of s…

Lastensuojelun asiakassuunnitelma sosiaalityön legitimoinnin välineenä : tutkimus Helsingin lastensuojelun avohuollon sosiaalityössä kirjoitetuista a…

2014

2009

Päivi Rinne tutki väitöskirjassaan, millaisia muutoksia palveluihin ja ammattityöhön sosiaalialan projekteilla tavoiteltiin, miten projekteja perusteltiin ja miten niissä toimittiin tavoitteiden saavuttamiseksi.Valtionhallinnossa toteutettiin 1990-luvulla julkishallinnon reformi, jossa vastuu julkisten palveluiden järjestämisestä siirtyi kunnille.

2016

Sustainable fertilization is one of the most important treatments of modern agriculture. Organic agriculture with new demands on agricultural practice, seeks to restrict the use of mineral fertilizers in favor of slow-action organic fertilizers. The fertilizers which are made on the farm are particularly valuable due to their quality and the absence of costs of purchase and transport. From this point of view, the new possibilities of using an organic matter which comes from waste of the food industry or biodegradable wastes from households proves to be interesting. Due to the absence of contamination with other types of waste, it can be used for the production of a fertilizer which could be…
