Texture analysis for infarcted myocardium detection on delayed enhancement MRI

2017

Detection of infarcted myocardium in the left ventricle is achieved with delayed enhancement magnetic resonance imaging (DE-MRI). However, manual segmentation is tedious and prone to variability. We studied three texture analysis methods (run-length matrix, co-occurrence matrix, and autoregressive model) in combination with histogram features to characterize the infarcted myocardium. We evaluated 10 patients with chronic infarction to select the most discriminative features and to train a support vector machine (SVM) classifier. The classifier model was then used to segment five human hearts from the STACOM DE-MRI challenge at MICCAI 2012. The Dice coefficient was used to compare the segmen…

Lesion Segmentation in Breast Sonography

2010

Sonography is gaining popularity as an adjunct screening technique for assessing abnormalities in the breast This is particularly true in cases where the subject has dense breast tissue, wherein widespread techniques like Digital Mammography (DM) fail to produce reliable outcomes This article proposes a novel and fully automatic methodology for breast lesion segmentation in B-mode Ultra-Sound (US) images by utilizing region, boundary and shape information to cope up with the inherent artifacts present in US images The proposed approach has been evaluated using a set of sonographic images with accompanying expert-provided ground truth.

Compatibility of surfactants with activated-persulfate for the selective oxidation of PAH in groundwater remediation

2017

Abstract Surfactants foam technology can improve the in situ remediation of hydrophobic organic contaminants by enhancing their solubility and the delivery of remediation chemicals. However, the presence of surfactants may impair the effectiveness of the selective oxidation of those contaminants. To tackle the issue, kinetics and selectivity of phenanthrene (PHE) oxidation in aqueous suspensions and its affecting factors including surfactant concentration (CS) and nature, temperature and persulfate (PS) concentration were studied. Significant differences in selectivity were observed between surfactants, reflecting Coulomb interactions with the anionic oxidizers.

First-principles characterization of the singlet excited state manifold in DNA/RNA nucleobases

2020

An extensive theoretical characterization of the singlet excited state manifold of the five canonical DNA/RNA nucleobases (thymine, cytosine, uracil, adenine and guanine) in gas-phase is carried out with time-dependent density functional theory (TD-DFT) and restricted active space second-order perturbation theory (RASPT2) approaches. Both ground state and excited state absorptions are analyzed and compared between these different theoretical approaches, assessing the performance of the hybrid B3LYP and CAM-B3LYP (long-range corrected) functionals with respect to the RASPT2 reference. By comparing the TD-DFT estimates with our reference for high-lying excited states, we are able to narrow do…

Modelling Photoionisations in Tautomeric DNA Nucleobase Derivatives 7H-Adenine and 7H-Guanine: Ultrafast Decay and Photostability

2021

The study of radiation effects in DNA is a multidisciplinary endeavour, connecting the physical, chemical and biological sciences. Despite being mostly filtered by the ozone layer, sunlight radiation is still expected to (photo)ionise DNA in sizeable yields, triggering an electron removal process and the formation of potentially reactive cationic species. In this manuscript, photoionisation decay channels of important DNA tautomeric derivatives, 7H-adenine and 7H-guanine, are characterised with accurate CASSCF/XMS-CASPT2 theoretical methods. These simulation techniques place the onset of ionisation for 7H-adenine and 7H-guanine on average at 8.98 and 8.43 eV, in line with recorded experimen…

Gamow-Teller response in the configuration space of a density-functional-theory–rooted no-core configuration-interaction model

2018

Background: The atomic nucleus is a unique laboratory in which to study fundamental aspects of the electroweak interaction. This includes a question concerning in medium renormalization of the axial-vector current, which still lacks satisfactory explanation. Study of spin-isospin or Gamow-Teller (GT) response may provide valuable information on both the quenching of the axial-vector coupling constant as well as on nuclear structure and nuclear astrophysics.Purpose: We have performed a seminal calculation of the GT response by using the no-core configuration-interaction approach rooted in multireference density functional theory (DFT-NCCI). The model treats properly isospin and rotational sy…

Molecular hydrogen (H2) mixing ratio and stable isotopic composition (dD) at the Cabauw tall tower in the Netherlands (2008-2012)

2016

Measurements of the stable isotopic composition (dD(H2) or dD) of atmospheric molecular hydrogen (H2) are a useful addition to mixing ratio (X(H2)) measurements for understanding the atmospheric H2 cycle. dD datasets published so far consist mostly of observations at background locations. We complement these with observations from the Cabauw tall tower at the CESAR site, situated in a densely populated region of the Netherlands. Our measurements show a large anthropogenic influence on the local H2 cycle, with frequently occurring pollution events that are characterized by X(H2) values that reach up to 1 ppm and low dD values. An isotopic source signature analysis yields an apparent source s…
