New Thiazole Nortopsentin Analogues Inhibit Bacterial Biofilm Formation.

New thiazole nortopsentin analogues were conveniently synthesized and evaluated for their activity as inhibitors of biofilm formation of relevant Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens. All compounds were able to interfere with the first step of biofilm formation in a dose-dependent manner, showing a selectivity against the staphylococcal strains. Analysis of the Transcriptome of the Red Seaweed Grateloupia imbricata with Emphasis on Reproductive Potential

Grateloupia imbricata is an intertidal marine seaweed and candidate model organism for both industry and academic research, owing to its ability to produce raw materials such as carrageenan. Here we report on the transcriptome of G. imbricata with the aim of providing new insights into the metabolic pathways and other functional pathways related to the reproduction of Grateloupia species. The Role of p53 Signaling in Colorectal Cancer.

Simple Summary The transcription factor p53 is a crucial tumor suppressor that regulates diverse cellular responses to protect against cancer development. Deactivating p53 signaling either by altering p53 regulators or by p53 mutations occurs frequently in human colorectal carcinoma (CRC). Forty-three percent of CRCs harbor p53 mutations that reduce wild-type p53 tumor suppressor activity and often provide neo-morphic functions, which contribute to tumorigenesis. Cell Proliferation High-Content Screening on Adherent Cell Cultures

Pulse-chase experiments using 5-bromo-2'-deoxyuridine (BrdU), or the more recent EdU (5-etynil-2'-deoxyuridine), enable the identification of cells going through S phase. This chapter describes a high-content proliferation assay pipeline for adherent cell cultures. Endogenous Myoglobin in Breast Cancer Is Hypoxia-inducible by Alternative Transcription and Functions to Impair Mitochondrial Activity

Recently, immunohistochemical analysis of myoglobin (MB) in human breast cancer specimens has revealed a surprisingly widespread expression of MB in this nonmuscle context. The positive correlation with hypoxia-inducible factor 2α (HIF-2α) and carbonic anhydrase IX suggested that oxygen regulates myoglobin expression in breast carcinomas. Here, we report that MB mRNA and protein levels are robustly induced by prolonged hypoxia in breast cancer cell lines, in part via HIF-1/2-dependent transactivation. Heritability of Lifetime Income

Using 15 years of data on Finnish twins, we find that 24% (54%) of the variance of women’s (men’s) lifetime income is due to genetic factors and that the contribution of the shared environment is negligible. We link these figures to policy by showing that controlling for education reduces the variance share of genetics by 5-8 percentage points; by demonstrating that income uncertainty has a genetic component half the size of its variance share in lifetime income; and by exploring how the genetic heritability of lifetime income is related to the macroeconomic environment, as measured by GDP growth and the Gini-coefficient of income inequality.

Echovirus 1 infection depends on biogenesis of novel multivesicular bodies

Summary Non-enveloped picornavirus echovirus 1 (EV1) clusters its receptor α2β1 integrin and causes their internalization and accumulation in α2β1 integrin enriched multivesicular bodies (α2-MVBs). Our results here show that these α2-MVBs are distinct from acidic late endosomes/lysosomes by several criteria: (i) live intra-endosomal pH measurements show that α2-MVBs are not acidic, (ii) they are not positive for the late endosomal marker LBPA or Dil-LDL internalized to lysosomes, and (iii) simultaneous stimulation of epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and α2β1 integrin clustering leads to their accumulation in separate endosomes.
