Study of the aminopeptidase N gene family in the lepidopterans Ostrinia nubilalis (Hübner) and Bombyx mori (L.): Sequences, mapping and expression

2010

Aminopeptidases N (APNs) are a class of ectoenzymes present in lepidopteran larvae midguts, involved in the Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) toxins mode of action. In the present work, seven aminopeptidases have been cloned from the midgut of Ostrinia nubilalis, the major Lepidopteran corn pest in the temperate climates. Six sequences were identified as APNs because of the presence of the HEXXH(X)18E and GAMEN motifs, as well as the signal peptide and the GPI-anchor sequences. The remaining sequence did not contain the two cellular targeting signals, indicating it belonged to the puromycin-sensitive aminopeptidase (PSA) family. An in silico analysis allowed us to find orthologous sequences in Bo…

Expression of engrailed in embryos of a beetle and five dipteran species with special reference to the terminal regions

1994

The engrailed expression in embryos of a beetle, four midges and a fly has been analysed with special reference to the terminal regions. In all six species the segmental expression pattern is very similar but variability occurs in the clypeolabrum, foregut and hindgut. In some cases, segmental engrailed expression seems to be extended into the hind- and/or foregut. The engrailed expression of these species is compared with published data from other insects.

1988 12. La huelga general paralizó España. El 14 D 1988. El divorcio UGT-PSOE

2014

About the Horrific Peril of Reading on Digital Devices

2015

Abstract Reading on digital devices has become a widely debated issue in mass media and academia. The dawn and consolidation of digital technology have made possible new devices for reading. In the Internet era, reading is not just a matter of books and paper. This loss of exclusiveness has generated different anxieties in many intellectuals, researchers, journalists, editors, and publishers related to the printing environment. An analysis of such uneasiness can provide clues about the hidden interests and misunderstandings implied in their arguments. Revealing anxious claims about digital devices can enlighten us about the multiple factors and interests involved in the act of reading.

Effect of 30 days of ketogenic Mediterranean diet with phytoextracts on athletes' gut microbiome composition.

2022

BackgroundRecent research suggest that gut microbiome may play a fundamental role in athlete's health and performance. Interestingly, nutrition can affect athletic performance by influencing the gut microbiome composition. Among different dietary patterns, ketogenic diet represents an efficient nutritional approach to get adequate body composition in athletes, however, some concerns have been raised about its potential detrimental effect on gut microbiome. To the best of our knowledge, only one study investigated the effect of ketogenic diet on the gut microbiome in athletes (elite race walkers), whilst no studies are available in a model of mixed endurance/power sport such as soccer. This …

Prebiotic Xylo-oligosaccharides Targeting Faecalibacterium prausnitzii Prevent High Fat Diet-induced Hepatic Steatosis in Rats

2020

Understanding the importance of gut microbiota (GM) in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) has raised the hope for therapeutic microbes. We have shown that high hepatic fat associated with low abundance of Faecalibacterium prausnitzii in humans and further, administration of F. prausnitzii prevented NAFLD in mice. Here, we aimed to target F. prausnitzii by prebiotic xylo-oligosaccharides (XOS) to treat NAFLD. First, the effect of XOS on F. prausnitzii growth was assessed in vitro. Then, XOS was supplemented or not with high (HFD) or low (LFD) fat-diet for 12-weeks in Wistar rats (n=10/group). XOS increased F. prausnitzii growth having only minor impact on the GM composition. When supp…

Aerobic Endospore-forming Bacteria and Soil Invertebrates

2011

The intestinal microbiotas of only a few soil invertebrates such as collembola (springtails), earthworms, nematodes, isopods (woodlice and pill bugs), millipedes and termites have been studied by classical and molecular methods in the last decades. It became obvious that these lower members of the soil biota harbour complex microbial communities that sometimes reach counts of 1011 cells ml−1 in their intestinal tracts. The gut microbiotas of the soil fauna include a variety of microorganisms from all three domains of life (Bacteria, Archaea, Eucarya). The bacterial species can mainly be assigned to the Gram-positive phyla Firmicutes and Actinobacteria as well as the Gram-negative phyla Prot…

Effects of soybean meal based diet on growth performance, gut histopathology and intestinal microbiota of juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss)

2006

Abstract Effects of soybean meal (SBM) based diet on growth performance, histology of the intestinal epithelium and on the gut microbiota of juvenile rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) were investigated on two trials lasting for 8 weeks (Trial I) and 18 weeks (Trial II). The microbiological characterization was done both with conventional plating techniques, biochemical profiling and length heterogeneity analysis of PCR amplified 16S rDNA (LH-PCR). Typical histological changes were found after 18 weeks of SBM feeding (Trial II). Mean height of simple foldings were significantly higher within the group fed with fish meal (FM) based diet. These changes were not, however, reflected in the app…

Differential enumeration and in situ localization of microorganisms in the hindgut of the lower termite Mastotermes darwiniensis by hybridization wit…

1999

We examined the abundance and spatial distribution of major phylogenetic groups of the domain Bacteria in hindguts of the Australian lower termite Mastotermes darwiniensis by using in situ hybridization with group-specific, fluorescently labeled, rRNA-targeted oligonucleotide probes. Between 32.0 +/- 7.2% and 52.3 +/- 8.2% of the DAPI-stained cells in different hindgut fractions were detected with probe EUB338, specific for members of the domain Bacteria. About 85% of the prokaryotic cells were associated with the flagellates of the thin-walled anterior region (P3a) and the thick wall of the posterior region (P3b/P4) of the hindgut, as shown by DAPI staining. At most, half of the EUB338-det…
