Why Am I the Only One You’re Talking to, Talk to Them, They Haven’t Said a Word? : Pitfalls and Challenges of Having the Child in the Focus of Family…

2021

Children with conduct disorders are at risk of being positioned in the family therapy as ‘the problem’. This study describes how the difficulties were talked about and how the child coped in this situation. The results showed: the parents produced symptom-oriented problem talk about the child’s behavior, rendering systemic reformulation of the problem challenging. The negative interaction made the climate unsafe and impaired consideration of the child’s behavior as a meaningful way for the child to become seen and heard. This study enriches understanding of the therapeutic challenge therapists face with high-risk families from the very beginning of the treatment. peerReviewed

Cosmic perturbation theory and inflation

2015

Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa olen käynyt läpi yhden skalaarikentän synnyttämän kosmisen inflaation teoriaa. Tätä varten olen opiskellut kosmista häiriöteoriaa joka tutkii Friedmann-Robertson-Walker -avaruusajan ympärille kehitettyjen häiriöiden kehitystä inflaation aikana. Kosmiset häiriöt riippuvat mitan valinnasta, joten olen esitellyt hyvin tunnetut mittainvariantit muuttujat, Mukhanovin-Sasakin muuttujan q sekä mukanaliikkuvan kaarevuushäiriön R. Lasken skalaari- ja tensorihäiriöiden tehospektrit sekä relevantit spektriparametrit. Lopuksi käyn läpi kaksi yksinkertaista esimerkkiä, potenssilaki-inflaatio sekä Higgs-inflaatio. In this thesis I have reviewed the basic theory of single sca…

Assessing physical performance and physical activity in large population-based aging studies: home-based assessments or visits to the research center?

2019

Abstract Background The current study aims to compare correlations between a range of measures of physical performance and physical activity assessing the same underlying construct in different settings, that is, in a home versus a highly standardized setting of the research center or accelerometer recording. We also evaluated the selective attrition of participants related to these different settings and how selective attrition affects the associations between variables and indicators of health, functioning and overall activity. Methods Cross-sectional analyses comprising population-based samples of people aged 75, 80, and 85 years living independently in Jyväskylä, Finland. The AGNES stud…

Mobility limitations and cognitive deficits as predictors of institutionalization among community-dwelling older people.

2006

Purpose: Mobility limitations and cognitive disorders have often been observed as risks for institutionalization. However, their combined effects on risk of institutionalization among initially community-dwelling older people have been less well reported. Design: A prospective cohort study with 10-year surveillance on institutionalization. Subjects: Study population (n = 476) consisted of 75- and 80-year-old people who were community-dwelling, had not been diagnosed with dementia, and participated in tests on walking speed and cognitive capacity at a research centre. Measures: Cognitive capacity was measured with th…

The Relationship Between Sleep Characteristics and Unmet Physical Activity Need in Older Women

2018

Objective: We examined among older women the association of sleep quality, daytime tiredness, and sleep duration with unmet physical activity need, that is, wishing to be more physically active but perceiving no opportunity for it. Method: Cross-sectional logistic regression analyses among women aged 74 to 86 years (Finnish Twin Study on Aging, third wave, n = 302). Results: Thirty-one participants reported unmet physical activity need. Short sleepers had fivefold and long sleepers threefold odds for unmet physical activity need compared with normative sleepers, while for daytime tiredness the odds were double. Presence of daytime tiredness and unmet physical activity coincided with higher…

Trends in sleeping difficulty among adolescents in five Nordic countries 2002–2014

2019

Sleep has been found to be an important factor in adolescents’ mental and physical health. The aim of the present study was to examine trends in sleep difficulty (i.e., difficulty falling asleep more often than once a week) in the Nordic countries among 11- to 15-year-olds. We analysed Nordic data from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children study (HBSC), which is conducted every four years, looking specifically at trends in sleep difficulty over a 12-year period from 2002 to 2014. The participants were aged 11 to 15 years. The total number of participants across these years was 113,447. A large percentage (17% to 31% in 2014) of adolescents in the Nordic countries experience sleep dif…

Supporting struggling readers with digital game-based learning

2019

This study investigates the effectiveness of a digital game—GraphoLearn (GL)—in supporting second-grade students who have persistent difficulties with acquiring accurate and fluent reading skills. The participants (N = 37) were randomly assigned either to a 6-week intervention including sessions with GL, in addition to school-provided support, or a control group receiving only school-provided support. The intervention took place at the students’ homes and schools under the supervision of their parents and teachers. The results showed that the children who received the GL intervention developed significantly faster in word reading than the control group. Moreover, their reading development w…

A mobile game as a support tool for children with severe difficulties in reading and spelling

2020

We used a randomized controlled trial to investigate if a mobile game, GraphoLearn (GL), could effectively support the learning of first graders (N = 70), who have severe difficulties in reading and spelling. We studied the effects of two versions of the game: GL Reading, which focused on training letter-sound correspondence and word reading; and GL Spelling, which included additional training in phonological skills and spelling. During the spring of first grade, the children trained with tablet computers which they could carry with them during the six-week intervention. The average exposure time to training was 5 hr 44 min. The results revealed no differences in the development of reading …

Game learning analytics for understanding reading skills in transparent writing system

2020

Serious games are designed to improve learning instead of providing only entertainment. Serious games analytics can be used for understanding and enhancing the quality of learning with serious games. One challenge in developing computerized support for learning is that learning of skills varies between players. Appropriate algorithms are needed for analyzing the performance of individual players. This paper presents a novel clustering-based profiling method for analyzing serious games learners. GraphoLearn, a game for training connections between speech sounds and letters, serves as the game-based learning environment. The proposed clustering method was designed to group the learners into p…
