Effects of irrigation, peat-alternative substrate and plant Habitus on the morphological and production characteristics of Sicilian rosemary (Rosmari…

2020

Irrigation and growing substrate are considered as essential cultivation practices in order to obtain good productive and qualitative performance of potted rosemary plants. In pot growing, the chemical, physical and biological characteristics of the substrate must be stable over time in order to allow regular plant growth. However, the effects of cultivation techniques on the characteristics of potted rosemary are little known. Peat is traditionally used as the organic growing medium

Mediterranean sponges from shallow subtidal rocky reefs: Cystoseira canopy vs barren grounds

2018

Abstract Porifera richness was investigated in Cystoseira canopies vs barren grounds considering different substrates at 6 areas in the Central-Western Mediterranean Sea. In total 31 sponge taxa were recorded at 2–7 m depth and the sponge community structure and composition were characterized by a notably low richness with 25 taxa in the Cystoseira forest and 15 in the barren area. As for the sponge habitus, the massive sponges were dominant in both facies, whereas encrusting, and cavity dwelling sponges were found in higher numbers in the Cystoseira forest. Results revealed that rocky substrata seem to play a key role in driving the sponge community composition and diversity in both facies…

The journalOsteuropaas a forum for Russian–German academic dialogue

2014

This article focuses on the interdisciplinary, monthly academic journal Osteuropa as a mediator between Russian and German academic discourses, and as a tool for bringing Russian perspectives closer to German intellectual audiences. The historical overview provided in this paper shall show the actors involved in the development of the journal since its founding at the beginning of the twentieth century. The actor–network theory and the Bourdieusian concepts of field and habitus will be deployed to reveal the academic networks Osteuropa is involved in and the role of the actors in them. Osteuropa's Russian collaborative partners and joint publication projects are presented in the paper. The …

Kurš šodien mazgās traukus? Mājsaimniecības darbu sadalīšana dzimumu līdztiesīgās attiecībās

2021

2016

Ņemot vērā, ka informācijas lietošanas process kļūst arvien aktuālāgs akadēmiskā un politiskā kotenstā, es piedāvāju analizēt šo jautājumu kontekstuāli, balstoties uz Burdjē (Bourdieu) habitus konceptu. Lietojot auto-etnogrāfiju, līdzdalīgo novērojumu, daļēji strukturētās intervijas un eksperimentālu vizuālo metodi, es parādu, ka habitus un tehnoloģijas ir labs sākumpunkts šāda veida pētījumiem, atklājot veidus, kā indivīdi izprot informācijas konceptu, konstruē mediju telpu ap sevi; spēj lietot informāciju stratēģiski, bet tajā pašā laikā rīkojas arī pus-automātiski un neapzināti. Taču kopējās sociālās ekspektācijas un nomācoši lielas informācijas apjoms noved indivīdus pie speciālām izvai…

European Mediterranean Women and the “Showdown” Between Public Emancipation and Private Self-oppression

2020

This chapter emphasizes the unfinished nature of a form of late-modernity still hanging in the balance between frameworks of representation and legitimization regarding women and the roles they play within the public sphere in virtue of the emancipation that has taken place and the contradictions which emerge when trying to reconcile old and new models of femininity. We shall, therefore, try to disengage some of the knots linking gender violence and “cultural representations” but, above all, the “adaptive preferences” and “corrosive disadvantages” found in European women’s private lives, which clash totally with their social achievements and are attributable to emotional oppression and, sim…

Bourdieu and Social Movements: Considering Identity Movements in terms of Field, Capital and Habitus

2013

This article examines the explanatory capacity of Pierre Bourdieu's work in relation to social movements and, in particular, identity movements. It aims to provide a theoretical framework drawing on Bourdieu's central concepts of field, capital and habitus. These concepts are viewed as providing a theoretical toolkit that can be applied to convincingly explain aspects of social movements that social movement theories, such as political process theory, resource mobilization theory and framing, acknowledge, but are not able to explain within a single theoretical framework. Identity movements are approached here in a way that relates them to the position agents/movements occupy in social space…

Organisation et conditions de la formation des doctorants dans le cadre de l'université française

2007

This research, refering to the theoretical framework of Pierre Bourdieu, shows that higher education can be considered as a “champ scientifique”, defined as a microcosm, relatively autonomous from the economic and social macrocosm, nevertheless strongly affected by its values and its evolution toward liberalism. This evolution is clearly perceveid in the structural reforms (contractualization, decentralization, increased autonomy...) inferred notably by the construction of the European Higher Education and Research Area. Higher education is structured in a hierarchy with dominating disciplines (mathematics, physique, chemistry...) at the center and, dominated disciplines (Social sciences an…

Becoming Politically Active: Life Courses and the Formation of Capitals among Young People of Migrant Origin in Finland

2020

This article focuses on the life courses of young people of migrant origin who are active in civic and political fields in Finland. The aim is to analyse, from the micro-level life course perspective, the issues in their lives that have helped them to become active. The article draws on empirical data collected using participatory methods. Four young people of migrant origin participated in the research process and contributed to the data analysis. The theoretical framework consists of Bourdieusian concepts of political habitus and emotional, cultural and social capital. The article shows that participants gained strong emotional capital during their childhood, which laid the groundwork for…
