In this study, we apply a liposomal melanin–fluorescein compound to an ex vivo model of human skin, using a new electrical microneedling device (Nano…
Hair Dyes in Cosmetics. Regulatory Aspects and Analytical Methods
2007
Abstract Fragrance ingredients are extensively used in perfumes and other cosmetics, providing us with a pleasant scent. However, different fragrance chemicals and other chemicals present in perfume composition have been shown to cause undesirable side effects. The EC Regulation prohibits and limits the contents of some of them in cosmetics. Other international organizations, such as the International Fragrance Association and the Research Institute for Fragrance Materials, work on the safety of fragrance chemicals and release reports on the convenience or not of using certain fragrance chemicals in cosmetics, depending on their toxicity. This chapter is focussed on the determination of fra…

IFN-alpha Stimulates Proliferation and Cytokine Secretion of CD40-Stimulated B Cell Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia Cells In Vitro
1999
Interferon (IFN)-alpha has a therapeutic effect in several B cell malignancies, including low-grade non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL), multiple myeloma, and hairy cell leukemia, whereas its efficacy in the treatment of B cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (B-CLL) is rather limited. In the present study, we investigated the effect of IFN-alpha on the biologic functions of B-CLL cells, which were stimulated by cross-linking of the CD40 antigen. In cell samples from 16 B-CLL patients, the addition of IFN-alpha to CD40-stimulated purified B-CLL cells caused a significant increase in [3H]thymidine uptake (p < 0.003). In B-CLL cells maximally activated by CD40 cross-linking and interleukin-2 (IL-2)/IL-…

Control of murine hair follicle regression (catagen) by TGF‐β1in vivo
2000
The regression phase of the hair cycle (catagen) is an apoptosis-driven process accompanied by terminal differentiation, proteolysis, and matrix remodeling. As an inhibitor of keratinocyte proliferation and inductor of keratinocyte apoptosis, transforming growth factor beta1 (TGF-beta1) has been proposed to play an important role in catagen regulation. This is suggested, for example, by maximal expression of TGF-beta1 and its receptors during late anagen and the onset of catagen of the hair cycle. We examined the potential involvement of TGF-beta1 in catagen control. We compared the first spontaneous entry of hair follicles into catagen between TGF-beta1 null mice and age-matched wild-type …
Ultrastructural evidence for protection of the outer hair cells of the inner ear during intense noise exposure by application of the organic calcium …
1999
Outer hair cells could be protected during intense noise exposure by the application of the calcium channel blocker diltiazem given before and after noise treatment. After various experimental approaches, the ultrastructural morphology was analysed for the different animal populations in the basal part of the second turn of the cochlea, which was the most destroyed area after an acute noise trauma caused by a gun shot (sound pressure at the ear drum 156 dB, frequency maximum between 4 and 6 kHz). Compared to untreated control specimens (experimental animal group I), the outer hair cells in the basal part of the second turn of the cochlea were mostly destroyed without any diltiazem applicati…
Clinical, Microscopic and Ultrastructural Findings in a Case of Short Anagen Syndrome
2017
Short anagen syndrome is an uncommon and recently described disease characterized by many telogen hairs and short maximum hair length. We report here the case of a 3-year-old girl whose short, sparse, fine hair since birth was consistent with short anagen syndrome. X-ray microanalysis demonstrated normal composition of the main bioelements of her hairs.
Match analysis of wheelchair padel players of different functional level
2018
The aim of this study was to quantify the kinematic demands of wheelchair padel and to examine the activity profiles in professional players according to their functional level. Twenty-two elite players classified in functional level groups (from 1 to 4) were video-analysed with a two-dimensional DLT corrected video system across seven matches of a professional tournament. The results showed players covered 729.6 ± 369.9 meters and 238.45 ± 129.45 turns per match during 1128.9 ± 583.04 second of effective playing time at a mean speed of 0.53 ± 0.49 m/s per rally. The WCP players’ functional classification had heavy influence on their activity profiles during matches, with a large associatio…
