“Do you understand (me)?” negotiating mutual understanding by using gaze and environmentally coupled gestures between two deaf signing participants
2020
Abstract In this paper we explore the use of multimodal and multilingual semiotic resources in interactions between two deaf signing participants, a researcher and an asylum seeker. The focus is on the use of gaze and environmentally coupled gestures. Drawing on multimodal analysis and linguistic ethnography, we demonstrate how gaze and environmentally coupled gestures are effective semiotic resources for reaching mutual understanding. The study provides insight into the challenges and opportunities (deaf) asylum seekers, researchers, and employees of reception centres or the state may encounter because of the asymmetrical language competencies. Our concern is that such asymmetrical situati…
Social media as a place to see and be seen : Exploring factors affecting job attainment via social media
2023
Job seekers can utilize social media platforms to actively search for job opportunities and also receive unsolicited job offers from recruiters and employers. Using data from a representative sample of Finnish social media users, this article studies both aspects of social media job attainment by analyzing how much individuals successfully apply for jobs and get recruited to positions through social media. Results show that the prevalence of successfully applying to jobs through social media does not differ statistically between socio-economic groups, but the prevalence of getting recruited to jobs through social media is greater within higher socio-economic groups. LinkedIn users are more …
Presidential speeches and the online politics of belonging : Affective-discursive positions toward refugees in Finland and Estonia
2019
The so-called ‘refugee crisis’ has added urgency to the social dynamics of inclusion and exclusion in European societies. This study explores how emotions figure in this politics of belonging by studying their discursive mobilization in Finnish and Estonian public debates on asylum seekers. Focusing on presidential speeches addressing the refugee issue, on the one hand, and their reception by online commenters on popular tabloid news sites, on the other, the comparative analysis highlights both similarities and differences in how emotional expressions are employed in these two countries with very different experiences of taking refugees. Despite employing common discursive elements in thei…
‘We hugged each other during the cold nights’: the role of affect in an anti-deportation protest network in Finland
2021
This article analyses the role of affect and emotions in Finland’s first large-scale anti-deportation protest, the 2017 Right to Live protest in Helsinki. Despite deportation protests having recently gained scholarly attention, their emotional dimensions have not been sufficiently studied, especially as concerns the emotions of protestors with vulnerable legal status. This article is based on in-depth interviews with key activists in the anti-deportation protest network in Finland, including asylum seekers, refugees and Finnish citizens. The article argues that in order for the protest of asylum seekers facing the threat of deportation to become public and visible, it was important that cit…
Auttamisen diskursiivinen rakentuminen Facebookissa Refugees Welcome Keski-Suomi -sivulla
2016
Maisterintutkielmassani tarkastelen, miten turvapaikanhakijoiden auttaminen rakentuu diskursiivisesti Facebookissa Refugees Welcome Keski-Suomi -sivulla. Euroopan pakolaiskriisin myötä Suomeen saapui viime vuonna yli 30 000 turvapaikanhakijaa, mikä synnytti kansalaisten keskuudessa auttamishalun, jollaista ei ole aikaisemmin Suomen mittakaavassa nähty. Tarkastelemani Facebook -sivu perustettiin turvapaikanhakijoiden auttamisen koordinoimiseksi. Vastaavanlaista sivustoa ei ole aikaisemmin perustettu, joten kyseessä on varsin uusi sosiaalisen median ilmiö. Päätutkimuskysymykseni on: Miten auttaminen rakentuu diskursiivisesti Facebookissa Refugees Welcome Keski-Suomi -sivulla? Tämä kysymys jak…

Visibility in mediated borderscapes : The hunger strike of asylum seekers as an embodiment of border violence
2018
In 2012, two Afghan asylum seekers camped outside the Parliament building in Helsinki during a hunger strike that lasted for 72 days. Although the protest was very visible in the city space, the mainstream media and most politicians ignored it. This paper analyzes the protest and its mediation through the concepts of borderscape and visibility. Using methods of visual and discourse analysis, we examine the ways in which the hunger strike protest – and its mediation – negotiate the (in)visibility of borders. We show how the city can be a site for both policing and for politicizing asylum issues. In particular, we focus on the ways in which protesting asylum seekers embody borders and border …
Itsensä brändääminen työhaastattelussa : työnhakijan strateginen valinta erottautua kilpailijoista
2015
On pystyttävä erottautumaan muista työnhakijoista. Tässä tutkimuksessa on tarkasteltu työnhakijoiden tapaa brändätä itseään työhaastattelussa. Sen lisäksi on haluttu selvittää minkälaisia tapoja brändäämiseen sisältyy ja, millä tavalla työnhakijat arvioivat brändäämisen onnistumista. Itsensä brändääminen on melko uusi käsite, minkä vuoksi tutkimukse…
Recognising forced migrants in transnational social work
2018
PurposeNation states’ neoliberal policies do not regard asylum seekers and undocumented migrants as deserving of a good life. Social work in welfare states is highly connected to the policies of nation states. There is a need to address theories in social work that have a transnational focus at the local level. Axel Honneth’s recognition theory enables an approach to forced migration from the direction of personal relations and personhood itself. The core idea is that if people cannot gain recognition, this causes harm to their self-realisation. The purpose of this paper is discuss how the recognition theory overcomes a national focus in social work.Design/methodology/approachThis paper is …
