Central nervous system (CNS) tuberculosis (TB) is a great medical masquerader having a multi-spectral pattern of clinical presentation, thereby complicating early diagnosis and appropriate management. This review article describes clinical presentation of CNS TB in a group of 47 patients, who were managed in the Nobel Medical College and Teaching Hospital in Biratnagar, Nepal during the last 2 years. We evaluated demographic profile, mode of management, and clinical outcome in these patients. The aim of this research is to illustrate clinical and instrumental features of central nervous system tuberculosis (CNS-TB) in childhood in order to allow prompt diagnosis and adequate patient management. TB remains one of the most important communicable diseases and represents a major global health problem. Although pulmonary TB tends to be the most common form of the disease, the highest mortality and morbidity occurs with TB of the central nervous system (CNS-TB), which develops in 4% of children with tuberculosis. Upstream migration activity of cyprinids and percids in a channel, monitored by a horizontal split-beam echosounder

A 200 kHz digital echosounder (HTI) with two split-beam transducers was aimed horizontally to monitor the upstream migration activity of fish, from 24 April to 28 June, in Aijalansalmi channel (mean width 35 m, length 700 m, and maximum depth 5 m) from large mesotrophic Lake Paijanne to small eutrophic Lake Jyvasjarvi. This study was part of a larger project which aims to analyse the movement of commercially unimportant fish species and reduce the abundance of these fish in L. Jyvasjarvi. Studies on bucephalid digeneans parasitising molluscs and fishes in Finland I. Ecological data and experimental studies

Two types of bucephalid cercariae are reported from the bivalve Anodonta anatina in two Finnish lakes. One, Type A, resembles in gross morphology the cercaria of Bucephalus polymorphus, and the other, Type B, resembles the cercaria of Rhipidocotyle campanula. Type A daughter-sporocysts develop more slowly, have a greater cercarial productivity and exhibit a differential diurnal rhythm to that of Type B. Cercariae of Type A have a shorter longevity than Type B and tend to encyst in the fins rather than the gill-arches of fish intermediate hosts. Diet composition and seasonal feeding patterns of a freshwater ringed seal (Pusa hispida saimensis)

The Saimaa ringed seal (Pusa hispida saimensis) is one of the few freshwater seal populations worldwide. The major conservation issue of this critically endangered population is bycatch mortality. We used digestive tract content and stable isotopes (d 13 Ca ndd 15 N) to estimate the diet and seasonal feeding patterns for gaining better understanding of the seals feeding habits and potential conservation implications. The diet was similar across age groups. Phenolic compounds of herbal infusions obtained from some species of the Lamiaceae family

Abstract The present investigation was to estimate the total phenolic content and composition of flavonoids and hydroxycinnamic acids in herbal infusions obtained from aerial parts of three Lamiaceae species (Dracocephalum moldavica, Ocimum americanum and Satureja hortensis). The total phenolic content of herbal infusions was determined using a spectrophotometric method, whereas the individual phenolics were assessed by high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The HPLC method was developed and validated. The total phenolic content was measured by applying the Folin-Ciocalteu method with reference to gallic acid. Diversity and distribution of feather lice on Greater Flamingoes (Phoenicopterus ruber roseus) in the Camargue, southern France

Feather lice were collected from 2S0 chicks of the Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus ruber roseus Pallas) captured alive in the Camargue, southern France, in July 1997. Five louse species were identified: Colpocephalum heterosoma Piaget, Colpocephalum salimalii Clay and Trinoton femoratum Piaget of the family Menoponidae; Anaticola phoenicopteri (Coinde) and Anatoecus pygaspis (Nitzsch [in Giebel]) of the family Philopteridae. Our collecting results also show that there is body-site segregation among the several louse species inhabiting the same host individual.

A molecular approach to the taxonomy and biogeography of African parrots

Random amplified polymorphic DNA analysis of blood samples from eight African parrot species was performed to study the genetic relationship within the genus Poicephalus and among Poi-cephalus and the two other main African parrot genuses, Agapornis and Psittacus. To this end, DNA from six Poicephalus species, one species, of the Agapornis group and the single Psittacus species was analysed. The amplification pattern was then converted into a binary matrix and scored by the unweighted pair-group method algorithm.
