Impact of fabric end-use knowledge on handle perception

2006

Abstract The objective was to determine whether the knowledge of the fabrics' end-use may impact the way textile experts organize their haptic perception. Two groups of 10 textile experts were asked to freely sort the same set of 25 fabrics in two different contexts. The first group was informed that the set of fabrics would be used to make dresses and the other one that they would be used to make sportswear. Both groups also rated the appropriateness of each fabrics for each end-use. Results did not show any effect of the end-use context. The two perceptual spaces were basically the same and accounted for appropriateness of use similarly. If confirmed, this result indicates that descriptiv…

Understanding of tactile pictures in visual impaired children

2015

The present PhD aims at understanding how Visual Impaired (VI) children process the tactile pictures that illustrate the tactile books specially designed for them. Our work is organized around two main axes of analysis. The first axis concentrates on the child who explores the tactile images, while the second axis focuses on the impact that the properties of these images can have on children’s haptic processing. Our researches included children presenting various degrees of visual impairment but without any associated disorders (in particular, without any cognitive delay), distinguishing early blind children from children with low vision. We also compared their performance with those of sig…

Contribution of vibrational modalities for navigation in virtual environments

2016

The virtual environment navigation may induces the simulator sickness depending on conditions and user’s profile. The potential virtual reality multimodality may provide solutions to these problems while improving the sense of presence. In this context, the objective of this research is to determine what is the impact of vibrational modalities for navigation in virtual environments on the simulation.A taxonomy of navigation methods is proposed. It results in 4 types, specific egocentric, specific exocentric, abstract egocentric and abstract exocentric. First we simulate rumble strip vibrations during a driving simulation. The experimentation exposed that these vibrations make driver more aw…

Retour sensoriel du toucher dans les environnements virtuels

2018

This thesis tackles the subject of the feedbacks of interactions in virtual environments. The theoretical part addresses the different perception schemes and the corresponding haptic modalities. We especially focused on the relevance of each modality for each use-case, on the compatibility with the visual systems which take an important place in virtual reality, and on the problematics of each situation. These studies led us to evaluate passive haptics and sensory substitution for interactions in CAVEs. The results show the importance of choosing the right modality relative to the scenario design. We also evaluated how mismatched the visual and haptic workfield can be, and how the performan…

Couplage visuo-haptique en environnement de conduite simulée

2012

Our visual-haptic system is requested as soon as our arms interact with our external environment. There is a coupling between visual and haptic modalities, so that the central nervous system takes in account the reliability and accuracy of both modalities in order to weigh their influence in the visual-haptic integration. Thus there is a rebalancing of the weight of each modality in the context of the visual-haptic solicitation. Typically, psychophysical studies implement short and repeated tasks, with or without sensory conflict, to understand the mechanisms underlying the visual-haptic coupling. Applied in our context, this method is excluded because we have to maintain the ecological cha…
