PS-039 DokuPIK – Pharmaceutical interventions: Do ward pharmacists know how to document?

2014

Background The internet-based categorical, hierarchical documentation system for routine pharmaceutical interventions (PIs) DokuPIK is widely used especially among German ward-based pharmacists. Purpose To conduct a survey-based study on its clinical usability. Materials and methods Out of 498 registered DokuPIK users, 37 volunteered to independently evaluate 24 standardised case reports 1 between 01–03 2012. Case evaluation was restricted to the reason for PI and was performed based on 26 given survey items with no limit on the number of items chosen. Ratings were conducted electronically and anonymously. In order to define meaningful reference item selections, majority decisions made by 5…

Pharmacokinetics of anidulafungin during albumin dialysis

2014

In the ICU setting, current guidelines recommend echi-nocandins as the first-line treatment for invasive candi-diasis [1]. Albumin dialysis (AD) has been used in theICU as supportive therapy for hepatic failure, but thistechnique can significantly enhance drug elimination [2].We prescribed anidulafungin for suspected invasivecandidiasis in a patient with severe liver failure treatedwith AD and measured the plasma concentrations of thedrug using high-performance liquid chromatography. This study (GEF-ANI-2010-02) was approved by thelocal ethics committee (INCLIVA, Institute of Research,Valencia, Spain) and written informed consent wasobtained from the patient’s next of kin. An adult patientwa…

Cigarette smoke extract activates human bronchial epithelial cells affecting non-neuronal cholinergic system signalling in vitro.

2010

Abstract Aims Acetylcholine (ACh) is synthesized by Choline Acetyl-Transferase (ChAT) that exerts its physiological effects in airway epithelial cells via muscarinic receptor (MR) activation. We evaluate the effect of ACh stimulation on human bronchial epithelial cells (16-HBE) and test whether cigarette smoke extract (CSE) can modify the basal cellular response to ACh affecting the non-neuronal cholinergic system signalling. Main methods ACh stimulated 16-HBE were tested for ACh-binding, Leukotriene B 4 (LTB 4 ) release and ERK1/2 and NFkB pathway activation. Additionally, we investigated all the aforementioned parameters as well as ChAT and MR proteins and mRNA expression and endogenous A…

LEUKOTRIENE RECEPTORS ON HUMAN PULMONARY VASCULAR ENDOTHELIUM

1995

1. Cysteinyl-leukotrienes cause contractions and/or relaxations of human isolated pulmonary vascular preparations. Although, the localization and nature of the receptors through which these effects are mediated have not been fully characterized, some effects are indirect and not mediated via the well-described LT1 receptor. 2. In human pulmonary veins (HPV) with an intact endothelium, leukotriene D4 (LTD4) induced contraction above basal tone. This response was observed at lower concentrations of LTD4 in the presence of nitric oxide synthase inhibitor N omega-nitro-L-arginine (L-NOARG). Contractions (in the absence and presence of L-NOARG) were partially blocked by the LT1 antagonists (MK 5…

Intraperitoneal injection of tetracyclines protects mice from lethal endotoxemia downregulating inducible nitric oxide synthase in various organs and…

1997

We have tested whether tetracyclines (TETs) are able to protect mice from lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced shock, a cytokine-mediated inflammatory reaction. Mice, injected with a single dose of tetracycline base (TETb; 1.5, 10 and 20 mg/kg of body weight) or doxycycline (DOXY; 1.5 mg/kg), were significantly protected from a lethal intraperitoneal injection of LPS (500 micrograms per mouse). TETs acted in early events triggered in response to LSP; in fact, they were no longer significantly protective if injected more than 1 h after the injection of endotoxin. LPS-treated mice protected by TETs showed a significant inhibition of tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-alpha), interleukin-1 alpha (IL…

Incretin-Based Therapies, Glucometabolic Health and Endovascular Inflammation

2013

Incretin peptides are a group of gastrointestinal hormones that play a prominent role in the regulation of glucose metabolism. Incretin-based therapies (IBTs) have recently emerged as an important treatment option for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). These pharmaceutical agents may be specially well suited for patients who are overweight or obese with primarily post-meal glucose peaks, and in whom traditional first-line oral agents have failed to maintain adequate glycemic control. There are 2 classes of IBTs: the dipeptidyl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors and the glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists. The ultimate effect of both types of agents is to augment GLP-1 …

Pharmacotherapy in bipolar disorders during hospitalization and at discharge predicts clinical and psychosocial functioning at follow-up

2014

Objective Individuals with bipolar disorder (BD) usually report significant disability and psychosocial impairment. Both the nature and causes associated with this impairment are poorly understood. In particular, research examining the impact of pharmacotherapy on the different aspects of psychosocial functioning in bipolar patients is currently lacking. The aim of this study was to assess to what extent the psychotropic medications used during psychiatric hospitalization and at discharge can predict clinical psychosocial functioning and the severity of the illness at follow-up in inpatients with bipolar disorder (BD). Methods Patients were 71 adult BD patients contacted on average 31 month…

Pharmacotherapy quality and patient safety in haemodialysis patients treated with erythropoiesis-stimulating agents

2008

Abstract Objective To assess an interdisciplinary programme for the improvement of pharmacotherapy quality and patient safety in patients with chronic renal disease who are treated with erythropoiesisstimulating agents. Method Observational, longitudinal study. Retrospective analysis (period A) and prospective analysis (period B) following implementation of the programme for haemoglobin values and monthly erythropoiesisstimulating agent dosage. The proportion of patients with haemoglobin values within the target range (10-5-12.5 g/dL) and those with values above the safety limit (≥12.5 g/dL) were compared every 4 months and the average percentage of time with haemoglobin values within the t…

Applicability of the STOPP/START criteria to older polypathological patients in a long-term care hospital

2017

Objectives To analyse the applicability of the STOPP/START criteria as a tool to identify patients with potentially inappropriate medications (PIM) during pharmaceutical validation of prescriptions in a long-term care hospital, to identify risk factors for PIM and to characterise the physiological systems and drugs more frequently associated with these PIM. Methods An interventional, prospective and longitudinal study was conducted in polypathological patients aged >65 years. Usual pharmaceutical care and the STOPP/START criteria were used to identify PIM and to plan pharmaceutical interventions at admission. At discharge, the discharge summaries were reviewed using the STOPP/START criteria…
