Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal (Indian ginseng, winter cherry, Solanaceae) is widely used in traditional medicine. Roots are either chewed or used to prepare beverages (aqueous decocts). The major secondary metabolites of Withania somnifera are the withanolides, which are C-28-steroidal lactone triterpenoids. Withania somnifera extracts exert chemopreventive and anticancer activities in vitro and in vivo. In the present work we reviewed recent advances concerning neuroprotective/neurotrophic effects of acute or chronic nicotine exposure, and the signalling pathways mediating these effects, including mechanisms implicated in nicotine addiction and nAChR desensitization. Experimental and clinical data largely indicate long-lasting effects of nicotine and nicotinic agonists that imply a neuroprotective/neurotrophic role of nAChR activation, involving mainly alpha 7 and alpha 4 beta 2 nAChR subtypes, as evidenced using selective nAChR agonists. Artikkelini tarkastelee neuvomista opinnäytteen ohjauksessa. Lähden liikkeelle dilemmasta: useissa ohjauksen käytännöissä esiintyy runsaasti ammattilaisen antamia neuvoja, vaikka ohjausmääritelmissä neuvomista kehotettaisiin välttämään. Pyrin selvittämään, miksi näin on. Tarkastelen ohjauksen ja neuvomisen välistä suhdetta kokoamalla neuvoja koskevia institutionaalisen vuorovaikutuksen tutkimustuloksia erilaisissa ohjauksellisissa konteksteissa. Vibrational Spectrum of HXeSH revisited : Combined computational and experimental study

Vibrational spectrum of HXeSH embedded in low-temperature matrix is experimentally studied. To support the spectrum interpretation, anharmonic vibrational analysis is performed using different models and basis sets and the data is compared with previous experimental and theoretical analyses. Computations of overtones and combination modes allowed for new band assignments. The HXeSH molecule exhibits high anharmonicity similarly as other molecules from the noble-gas hydride family. Comparison of the employed computational methods shows once again that the modelling of the noble-gas compounds faces theoretical challenges to yield quantitatively reliable results. peerReviewed
Ghost stochastic resonance in FitzHugh–Nagumo circuit

International audience; The response of a neural circuit submitted to a bi-chromatic stimulus and corrupted by noise is investigated. In the presence of noise, when the spike firing of the circuit is analysed, a frequency not present at the circuit input appears. For a given range of noise intensities, it is shown that this ghost frequency is almost exclusively present in the interspike interval distribution. This phenomenon is for the first time shown experimentally in a FitzHugh-Nagumo circuit.

Bakalaura darba tēma – Nefarmakoloģiskās atsāpināšanas metodes jaundzimušo intensīvās terapijas nodaļā. Šī tēma ir aktuāla, jo ik gadu pasaulē nāk ap 15 miljoniem bērnu , no kuriem vismaz viens no 10 jaundzimušajiem piedzimst pirms laika. Savukārt Latvijā katru gadu pirms laika jeb agrāk par pilnām 37 grūtniecības nedēļām dzimst vairāk nekā 1000 bērni, tie ir aptuveni 6% no kopējā dzimušo skaita.
