Second- and third-harmonic generation as a local probe for nanocrystal-doped polymer materials with a suppressed optical breakdown threshold

2003

Abstract Second- and third-harmonic generation processes are shown to allow the detection of absorptive agglomerates of nanocrystals in transparent materials and the visualization of optical breakdown in nanocomposite materials. Correlations between laser-induced breakdown and the behavior of the second- and third-harmonic signals produced in SiC/PMMA nanocomposite films are studied. The potential of second- and third-harmonic generation for the on-line visualization of laser breakdown in nanocomposite polymer materials is revealed, with the ablative material removal being monitored by the decay of the second- and third-harmonic signals. The second and third harmonics generated around the o…

Raman study of the phase transitions sequence in pure WO3 at high temperature and in HxWO3 with variable hydrogen content

1999

Abstract An extensive investigation of the temperature dependence of Raman spectra has been carried out on WO 3 powders from room temperature to 800°C. In particular the orthorhombic-to-tetragonal phase transition occurring at about 740°C has been studied for the first time. The Raman active mode at 710 cm −1 of the orthorhombic phase disappears from the spectrum at temperature below the phase transition point and the Raman activity in the tetragonal phase results very low. A comparative study of hydrogenated tungsten bronzes H x WO 3 ( x ≤0.23), where the same transition sequence is driven by an increase of the proton concentration from x =0 to 0.23, reveals similar behaviour of the high f…

Optical characterization of YCa4O(BO3)3 and Nd:YCa4O(BO3)3 crystals

2007

International audience; We report a complete optical characterization of YCa4O(BO3)3 and Nd:YCa4O(BO3)3 crystals. We studied the relative orientation between the dielectric and the crystallographic frames as a function of the wavelength and performed accurate phase-matching angles measurements for second harmonic generation, using a single crystal cut as a sphere. We also recorded polarized luminescence spectra of Nd:YCOB along the principal axes of the dielectric frame. For both crystals, we measured the gray-tracking and the thermo-optic properties as a function of temperature and wavelength using oriented slabs. Finally, we measured all their dielectric and electro-optic coefficients, as…

Low angle neutron scattering of ferritin studied by contrast variation.

1976

Ferritins containing different amounts of iron have been studied by neutron small angle scattering in H 2 O/D 2 O mixtures. Apoferritin has also been studied in solutions of small organic molecules. There is a larger contrast variation in the solutions of small organic molecules than in the corresponding H 2 O/D 2 O experiments from which it may be calculated that I g of apoferritin contains 0·3 g of H 2 O. The solvent composition at zero contrast varies regularly with the iron content of the protein: there is evidence for polydispersity in the iron content of the ferritin used. From analysis of the scattering curves it is concluded that the iron is probably not homogeneously distributed in…

Proton tautomerism in 2-nitramino-C-nitropyridine derivatives - Experimental and quantum chemical study

2019

Abstract The structures of 2-nitramino-3-nitropyridine and 2-nitramino-5-nitropyridine have been characterized by X-ray diffraction and Density Functional Theory (DFT) studies. In the crystals, both compounds exist as the imino forms. The DFT calculations were performed in order to explore the amino-imino tautomerism of the studied compounds in the gas phase and the influence of solvent polarity on the tautomeric equilibrium. The Harmonic Oscillator Model of Aromaticity index (HOMA) and Nucleus Independent Chemical Shift (NICS) calculated for the pyridine rings of the studied systems, demonstrated a noticeable decrease in aromaticity of the imino forms. This study showed also that the highe…

Discrete wavelet transform implementation in Fourier domain for multidimensional signal

2002

Wavelet transforms are often calculated by using the Mallat algorithm. In this algorithm, a signal is decomposed by a cascade of filtering and downsampling operations. Computing time can be important but the filtering operations can be speeded up by using fast Fourier transform (FFT)-based convolutions. Since it is necessary to work in the Fourier domain when large filters are used, we present some results of Fourier-based optimization of the sampling operations. Acceleration can be obtained by expressing the samplings in the Fourier domain. The general equations of the down- and upsampling of digital multidimensional signals are given. It is shown that for special cases such as the separab…

Response Power Spectrum of Multi-Degree-of-Freedom Nonlinear Systems by a Galerkin Technique

2003

This paper deals with the estimation of spectral properties of randomly excited multi-degree-of-freedom (MDOF) nonlinear vibrating systems. Each component of the vector of the stationary system response is expanded into a trigonometric Fourier series over an adequately long interval T. The unknown Fourier coefficients of individual samples of the response process are treated by harmonic balance, which leads to a set of nonlinear equations that are solved by Newton’s method. For polynomial nonlinearities of cubic order, exact solutions are developed to compute the Fourier coefficients of the nonlinear terms, including those involved in the Jacobian matrix associated with the implementation o…

Nanopatterned ferroelectric crystals for parametric generation

2006

We report on recent results by surface periodic poling on lithium niobate and lithium tantalate. Such approach allows periodic inversion of the second order susceptibility with nanoscale features using insulating masks. We achieved a world-best 200 nm feature size, as well as good compatibility with alpha-phase proton exchanged channel waveguides in lithium niobate. Preliminary results of surface periodic poling in lithium tantalate also show similar characteristics. Surface poling is best suited for integrated optics devices in technologically-demanding configurations such as backward second harmonic generation and counter propagating optical parametric amplification

Nonlinear Microwave Spectrometer for Investigating High-Tc Superconductors

2000

We describe a nonlinear microwave spectrometer, which can be conveniently used for investigating the harmonic generation at microwave frequencies in high-Tc superconductors. The use of this technique allows highlighting mechanisms responsible for the nonlinear microwave response of high-Tc superconductors as well as measuring specific characteristics of the investigated samples. We report a brief review of the main results obtained.
