High-frequency even harmonics generation in a plasma with electron heat flux

2004

It is shown that in a weakly nonuniform plasma with electron heat flux the generation of odd and even harmonics of high frequency radiation is possible. The even harmonics properties qualitatively differ as compared to those of odd harmonics and depend in an essential way on the heat flux value and orientation with respect to the fundamental wave polarization and propagation directions.

Simulating open quantum systems with trapped ions

2005

This paper focuses on the possibility of simulating the open system dynamics of a paradigmatic model, namely the damped harmonic oscillator, with single trapped ions. The key idea consists in using a controllable physical system, i.e. a single trapped ion interacting with an engineered reservoir, to simulate the dynamics of other open systems usually difficult to study. The exact dynamics of the damped harmonic oscillator under very general conditions is firstly derived. Some peculiar characteristic of the system’s dynamics are then presented. Finally a way to implement with trapped ion the specific quantum simulator of interest is discussed.

Quantum transport of non-interacting Fermi gas in an optical lattice combined with harmonic trapping

2004

We consider a non-interacting Fermi gas in a combined harmonic and periodic potential. We calculate the energy spectrum and simulate the motion of the gas after sudden replacement of the trap center. For different parameter regimes, the system presents dipole oscillations, damped oscillations around the replaced center, and localization. The behaviour is explained by the change of the energy spectrum from linear to quadratic.

Experimental verification of a self-consistent calculation for continuous frequency-tune with a 400 GHz band second harmonic gyro-BWO

2013

A self-consistent code is introduced to develop a continuous frequency tunable gyro-BWO. A cavity is designed with TE8,5 mode for 400 GHz band second harmonic oscillation. The experimental verification has been carried out and 2 GHz tunability is observed with output powers of higher than 40 W.

Gouy wave modes: undistorted pulse focalization in a dispersive medium.

2007

Gouy wave modes are linear waves with finite energy that propagate without distortion at any phase and group velocity through a focal region in a dispersive medium. These features make them potentially useful for the onset and control of nonlinear interactions.

Echolocation signals of the plecotine bat, Plecotus macrobullaris Kuzyakin, 1965

2006

Plecotus macrobullaris was recorded in an alpine region in Switzerland. Like other species of the genus Plecotus, P. macrobullaris emitted multiharmonic, downward frequency-modulated signals consisting mostly of the 1st and the lower part of the 2nd harmonic. Signal structure depended on the distance to the background. The shortest signals (0.8 ms) were recorded close to the background. The first harmonic began at about 46 kHz and ended around 23 kHz. Signals were emitted in groups. The longest signals (up to 7.3 ms) were recorded above a meadow, far from background targets. These signals, which were more shallowly modulated, started at about 42 kHz and ended around 15 kHz. They occasionall…

Second harmonic generation by an isolated spin

1970

Abstract The second harmonic generation at microwave frequency by a spin S = 1 2 in a cavity has been studied as a function of the external magnetic field using a resolvent technique, and the average transition rates to states with an increased number of double-frequency photons has been calculated. In spite of the crudeness of the model, a good qualitative agreement has been found between the predictions of the present theory and recent experimental results on non-linear behaviour of paramagnetic spin systems in a microwave field.

Quadratic solitons in 2D nonlinear photonic crystals

2007

We report on the first observation of spatial solitons in a 2D nonlinear photonic crystal. The experiments were performed in an hexagonally poled LiNbO3 waveguide designed for second harmonic generation from ~1.55 micron.

Motion of compactonlike kinks.

1999

We analyze the ability of a compactonlike kink (i.e., kink with compact support) to execute a stable ballistic propagation in a discrete Klein-Gordon system with anharmonic coupling. We demonstrate that the effects of lattice discreteness, and the presence of a linear coupling between lattice sites, are detrimental to a stable ballistic propagation of the compacton, because of the particular structure of the small-oscillation frequency spectrum of the compacton in which the lower-frequency internal modes enter in direct resonance with phonon modes. Our study reveals the parameter regions for obtaining a stable ballistic propagation of a compactonlike kink. Finally we investigate the interac…
