Molecular mode-coupling theory applied to a liquid of diatomic molecules

2000

We study the molecular mode coupling theory for a liquid of diatomic molecules. The equations for the critical tensorial nonergodicity parameters ${\bf F}_{ll'}^m(q)$ and the critical amplitudes of the $\beta$ - relaxation ${\bf H}_{ll'}^m(q)$ are solved up to a cut off $l_{co}$ = 2 without any further approximations. Here $l,m$ are indices of spherical harmonics. Contrary to previous studies, where additional approximations were applied, we find in agreement with simulations, that all molecular degrees of freedom vitrify at a single temperature $T_c$. The theoretical results for the non ergodicity parameters and the critical amplitudes are compared with those from simulations. The qualitat…

Lock-In Signal Post-Processing Techniques in Infra-Red Thermography for Materials Structural Evaluation

2013

This paper describes the potential of off-line thermographic signal processing by means of Lock-In Correlation algorithms, in order to implement structural health monitoring and stress analysis techniques. Thermal datasets acquired by infrared thermocameras are locked-in and correlated numerically with opportune reference signals, and amplitude and phase values of various harmonics retrieved by means of a Fast Fourier Transform and time averaging based filtering. This information is then processed for NDT defect probing and for evaluating the Thermoelastic Effect induced temperature changes. Two case studies in particular are discussed, implementing the proposed signal lock-in processing: a…

Signal processing and frequency-dependent associative memory based on nanoswitches

2008

A signal processing concept based on nanoscale switches whose conductance can be tuned by an external stimulus between two (ON and OFF) states is proposed and analyzed theoretically. The building block of the system is formed by a metal nanoparticle linked to two electrodes by an organic ligand and a molecular switch. When we apply an alternating potential to the system of the same frequency as the periodic variation between the ON and OFF states induced on the switch, the net charge delivered by the system exhibits a sharp resonance. This resonance can be used to process an external signal by selectively extracting the weight of the different harmonics. In addition, a frequency-dependent a…

Spectrum emitted by a trapped electron

2007

We study the behaviour of a homonuclear molecule driven by an intense laser field. Newton's laws are used to describe the dynamics of nuclei while the quantal approach is reserved to the study of the electron. It is observed that the nuclei can oscillate or dissociate according to the degree of ionization of the molecule. In case of low ionization rate it is shown that great amount of information can be obtained by using the simplified approaches of fixed nuclei and of two-state approximation. Under suitable conditions the electron wave function spends a long time localized around one nucleus. The harmonic generation of the molecule is studied and seen to contain even harmonics.

Effects of 3rd-harmonic voltage content on dielectric losses of solid insulating materials

1981

Dielectric losses in solid insulating materials subjected to voltages containing 3rd harmonics are studied. By simple theoretical analysis, some curves are obtained showing the behaviour of the ratio between the dielectric losses in the distorted steady state and in a reference sinusoidal steady state, against 3rd-harmonic content. The reference sinusoidal voltage amplitudes were selected in two different ways; namely, such as to have either peak value or effective value equal to those of distorted waveform.Separate effects of harmonic content and of effective value of the applied voltage are shown through the correspondence of every 3rd-harmonic phase angle. Percentage differences between …

A reexamination of voltage distortion for classical carrier-based vs B-Spline modulation of three-phase Voltage Sources Inverters

2015

Voltage waveform improvement has been the object of several investigations for many years and a manifold of different solutions have been proposed to reduce the harmonic content in Voltage Source Inverters (VSI) power application. In many cases this improvements have been obtained by modifying the reference voltage modulating signal. The recent introduction of cardinal B-spline functions, used as carrier signals, has given rise to a new modulation technique whose main characteristic is a lower value of the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). After the discussion on the B-Spline modulation principle and on its computational effort, a performance comparisons is carried out by means of Total Harm…

Mathematical formulation of pulse amplitude modulation selective harmonic elimination in multilevel three phase inverters

2022

In this paper multilevel cascaded H-bridges (CHB) three phase inverters with 2n dc sources, n=1,2,3,... are considered and a mathematical formulation providing both 2n switching angles and dc voltage source to eliminate n+1 harmonics and their respective multiple from their output voltage waveform, is proposed. The computed angles don't depend on modulation index and the source voltages linearly vary with it. The proposed procedure finds the solution through an analytical formula that avoids to solve transcendental systems and presents very low computational cost. A lot of low order harmonics are eliminated, returning a very low total harmonic distortion (THD). Particularly for 9-level conf…

A self-synchronizing instrument for harmonic sources detection in power systems

2004

The deregulation of energy markets holds out new prospects for contract between customers and utilities, in which the price of energy can depend on voltage quality and load characteristics, as well as on the responsibility for disturbances caused to supply voltage in power systems. In this context, harmonic sources detection is one of the main problems, because of equipment sensibility and the proliferation of loads which absorb non-sinusoidal currents. In this paper the authors present a new instrument based on a time domain method for the detection of harmonic active powers in three-phase systems, which can be usefully applied even in the presence of unbalance or asymmetry. The amplitude …

Metrological characterization and operating principle identification of static meters for reactive energy: an experimental approach under nonsinusoid…

2009

In this paper, an experimental approach is proposed for the metrological characterization of the static meters for reactive energy and for the individuation of their operating principle in nonsinusoidal conditions. The proposed approach was developed by starting from the only available accuracy test condition in the presence of the harmonics introduced by the standards for active static meters. In this paper, the proposed approach is described, and some experimental tests are presented, which were performed on some meters of different accuracy classes and with both known and unknown operating principles.
