The toxic and lethal effects of the trehalase inhibitor trehazolin in locusts are caused by hypoglycaemia

SUMMARY The main blood sugar of locusts is trehalose, which is hydrolysed to two glucose units by trehalase. Homogenates of locust flight muscles are rich in trehalase activity, which is bound to membranes. A minor fraction of trehalase is in an overt form while the remainder is latent, i.e. active only after impairing membrane integrity. Trehazolin, an antibiotic pseudosaccharide,inhibits locust flight muscle trehalase with apparent Ki-and EC50 values of 10–8 mol l–1and 10–7 mol l–1, respectively. The non-appearance of female-specific proteins in male Spilostethus pandurus)

1. 1. Female-specific peptides can be detected by SDS-PAGE in the haemolymph when the female insects are 48 hr old. 2. 2. The age of the male insect at the moment of treatment with juvenile hormone I (JH I), JH III or ecdysone has no influence on the induction of the female-specific bands in male S. pandurus. 3. 3. Male insects exposed to the hormones for periods of time longer than 24 hr were also unable to show female-specific bands in their haemolymph. Consecutive treatments with JH were unable to induce these peptides in the males.

Hemocyanin in mollusks--a molecular survey and new data on hemocyanin genes in Solenogastres and Caudofoveata.

The most common respiratory protein of mollusks is the blue, copper-containing hemocyanin (van Holde and Miller, 1995). It is not bound to hemocytes but suspended in the hemolymph. Its molecular mass ranges from 3500 10 to 8000 10 Da (dalton) or even more (Herskovits, 1988). These differences in molecular weight are due to the fact that the basic decamers that constitute the barrel-shaped protein may aggregate to didecamers or multidecameric elongated particles (Herskovits, 1988). Rhogocytes, also termed “pore cells”, occur as solitary or clustered cells in the connective tissue of gastropod molluscs. Rhogocytes possess an enveloping lamina of extracellular matrix and enigmatic extracellular lacunae bridged by cytoplasmic bars that form 20 nm diaphragmatic slits likely to act as a molecular sieve. Recent papers highlight the embryogenesis and ultrastructure of these cells, and their role in heavy metal detoxification. Phenoloxidases occur in almost all organisms, being essentially involved in various processes such as the immune response, wound healing, pigmentation and sclerotization in arthropods. Many hemocyanins are also capable of phenoloxidase activity after activation. Notably, in chelicerates, a phenoloxidase has not been identified in the hemolymph, and thus hemocyanin is assumed to be the physiological phenoloxidase in these animals. It takes time to see the menu from the body: an experiment on stable isotope composition in freshwater crayfishes

For many applications and ecological studies in which wild individuals are brought to laboratory it would be essential to know accurately how fast novel diet is reflected in composition of different tissues. To study the effects of two different diets on the stable isotope composition of freshwater crayfish muscle and hemolymph, we conducted a three month experiment on noble crayfish (Astacus astacus) and signal crayfish (Pacifastacus leniusculus) by feeding them sweet corn (Zea mays) or Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras) as novel food.
