Viimeistään 1900-luvulta lähtien on ajateltu, että yhteinen sukunimi symboloi suomalaista perhettä julkisissa yhteyksissä ja muodostaa perheenjäsenten yhteisen identiteetin perustekijän. Suomen lainsäädännön mukaan naiset olivat kuitenkin velvollisia ottamaan aviomiehensä sukunimen vain lyhyen aikaa, 1930-luvulta 1980-luvulle ulottuvalla ajanjaksolla. In this dissertation, I study national campaigns aimed at constructing Estonian national identity in 1934–1940. The campaigns were organized through the cooperation of Konstantin Päts’ authoritarian government and civil society. I focus on the folk art campaign and on the name changing campaign. The name changing campaign was the largest national project in Estonia, aiming at the Estonification of names. Initially, the campaign focused on changing individuals’ surnames and first names, but later also on changing the names of places, streets and properties. Tarkastelen pro gradu -tutkielmassani suomen- ja unkarinkielisten etunimien appellatiivistumista eli yleisnimistymistä slangiyhdyssanoissa. Tutkimuskohteeni ovat suomalaiset ja unkarilaiset slangiyhdyssanat, joiden perus- tai määriteosana on etunimen homonyymi, siis appellatiivistunut etunimi. Esimerkkejä etunimen homonyymin sisältävistä yhdyssanoista ovat suomenkieliset slangisanat parkkipirkko, jolla viitataan ’pysäköinninvalvojaan’, ja isoiita, joka tarkoittaa ’isokokoista naista’. Using the concept of onomastic literacy as an analytical tool : A methodological examination of the names of European royal families

Onomastic literacy (the skills needed to interpret the cultural and social phenomena and meanings related to name-giving) are part of a person’s cultural capital. I use this concept, which I have developed, to study personal names in family networks and in royal families in particular. This research combines the approaches and methodologies of collective biography, microhistory and the history of mentalities. The concept of onomastic literacy helps us to contextualize the lives of the research objects more closely as part of the cultures and local communities of their times, thereby revealing the deep-rooted motives behind name choices and the slow change in mentalities affecting naming. pe…
