Chromo- and magnifying endoscopy for colorectal lesions

It is essential to identify patients with premalignant or early malignant changes during colonoscopy. Thus, curative resection can be offered. At present, endoscopy can be performed with new powerful high-resolution or magnifying endoscopes. Comparably to the rapid development in chip technology, the optic features of the newly designed endoscopes offer resolutions which allow new mucosal surface details to be seen. In conjunction with chromoendoscopy, the newly discovered tool video endoscopy is much easier and more impressive than with conventional fibre optics. This review summarizes the value of magnifying endoscopy in the lower gastrointestinal tract and focuses on colorectal lesions.

Background & Aims Antiviral agents suppress hepatitis B virus (HBV) replication but do not clear the infection. A strong effector T-cell response is required to eradicate HBV, but this does not occur in patients with chronic infection. T cells might be directed toward virus-infected cells by expressing HBV-specific receptors and thereby clear HBV and help to prevent development of liver cancer. Background and Aims IL-17–producing CD4 + T-helper cells (Th17) contribute to chronic autoimmune inflammation in the brain, and levels of Th17-derived cytokines increase in patients with colitis, suggesting a role in pathogenesis. Nutrition during pregnancy plays an important role in maternal–neonatal health. However, the impact of specific dietary components during pregnancy on maternal gut microbiota and the potential effects on neonatal microbiota and infant health outcomes in the short term are still limited. Effect of lactose, lactulose and bisacodyl on gastrointestinal transit studied by metal detector.

SUMMARY Aim and methods: To study the effect of 45 g lactose, 30 g lactulose and 10 mg bisacodyl on gastrointestinal transit in 30 healthy volunteers by metal detector and Hinton marker method. The first set of measurements were performed under standard conditions. In a second stage, transit was slowed to twice the original value by loperamide to simulate constipation conditions. Results: Bisacodyl drastically accelerated small and large intestinal transit. Colonic transit was shortened to 23 % and to 31% of control values, without and with loperamide.
