Universal Behavior of Quantum Spin Liquid and Optical Conductivity in the Insulator Herbertsmithite

We analyze optical conductivity with the goal to demonstrate experimental manifestation of a new state of matter, the so-called fermion condensate. Fermion condensates are realized in quantum spin liquids, exhibiting typical behavior of heavy fermion metals. Measurements of the low-frequency optical conductivity collected on the geometrically frustrated insulator herbertsmithite provide important experimental evidence of the nature of its quantum spin liquid composed of spinons. The endoperoxide ascaridol shows strong differential cytotoxicity in nucleotide excision repair-deficient cells

Targeting synthetic lethality in DNA repair pathways has become a promising anti-cancer strategy. However little is known about such interactions with regard to the nucleotide excision repair (NER) pathway. Therefore, cell lines with a defect in the NER genes ERCC6 or XPC and their normal counterparts were screened with 53 chemically defined phytochemicals isolated from plants used in traditional Chinese medicine for differential cytotoxic effects. The screening revealed 12 drugs that killed NER-deficient cells more efficiently than proficient cells. A simple algorithm to estimate evapotranspiration from DAIS data: Application to the DAISEX campaigns

In this paper, a methodology is presented to estimate evapotranspiration using the surface energy balance model S-SEBI (Simplified Surface Energy Balance Index) and the evaporative fraction. The method is applicable under the assumptions of constant atmospheric conditions and sufficient wet and dry pixels over the image. Comparison of the relative quantities of aroma compounds found in fresh apricot (Prunus armeniaca) from six different varieties

The volatile components of fresh apricot (Prunus armeniaca) were isolated by vacuum distillation and fractionated on a silica gel column. Analysis by gaschromatography coupled with mass spectrometry led to the identification of 82 compounds, 60 of which were found for the first time in this fruit. Six varieties, cultivated in the south of France were compared for their firmness, acidity, sweetness and for their content of 56 volatile components. Precoce de Tyrinthe was the least aromatic variety, but produced fruits very early in the season. Palsteyn gave acidic but rather aromatic fruits. Acyclovir Delivery Matrices Based on Poly(Ethylene Glycol)/Chitosan Semi-Interpenetrating Networks

Abstract Chitosan matrix systems have been studied as potential vehicles for the prolonged release of acyclovir (ACV). The influence of chitosan concentration (from 0.83% to 1.67%) on viscoelastic properties of formulations with and without glyoxal was analyzed. For chitosan‐poly(ethylene glycol) 400 formulations loss modulus ( G ″) are greater than storage modulus ( G ′). This corresponds to the characteristic behavior of nonstructured systems. When glyoxal was added to the chitosan‐poly(ethylene glycol) 400 formulations, gelled matrix was obtained (i.e., G ′ is higher than G ″), except for the lowest chitosan concentration. A contribution to the characterization of Ruppia drepanensis (Ruppiaceae), a key species of threatened Mediterranean wetlands

To elucidate the taxonomic status of Ruppia drepanensis Tineo ex Guss. (Alismatales, Ruppiaceae), we performed morphological analysis and DNA barcoding of historical materials (including the lectotype) and fresh samples (including those from a recently discovered population near the locus classicus in Sicily, Italy). We conclude that R. drepanensis is a separate species, closely related to R. spiralis L. ex Dumort., that occurs in temporary inland waters from the western to central sectors of the Mediterranean region. We also highlight the importance of vouchers and the need to link molecular investigations to field, ecological, and morphological investigations.

Biodiversity-functioning relations in microorganisms

The role of microorganisms as key components in the functioning of ecosystems and biodiversity is discussed. The latest methodologies developed to study microbial diversity and functioning of ecosystems are considered, as DNA extraction and isotope labeling, fluorescent in situ hybridization and microautoradiography, and tracking of a substrate labeled with a stable isotope. Investigations related to correlations between microbial diversity and functioning in situ are considered. An example is illustrated of a correlation of erosion of microbial diversity of natural microbial community in prairie soil and erosion of species diversity in an ecosystem.
