Ocean acidification as a driver of community simplification via the collapse of higher-order and rise of lower-order consumers

AbstractIncreasing oceanic uptake of CO2 is predicted to drive ecological change as both a resource (i.e. CO2 enrichment on primary producers) and stressor (i.e. lower pH on consumers). We use the natural ecological complexity of a CO2 vent (i.e. a seagrass system) to assess the potential validity of conceptual models developed from laboratory and mesocosm research. Our observations suggest that the stressor-effect of CO2 enrichment combined with its resource-effect drives simplified food web structure of lower trophic diversity and shorter length. Functional traits of two co-occurring sea urchins across a barren/forest patch system

Abstract Temperate rocky reefs may occur in two alternative states (coralline barrens and erect algal forests), whose formation and maintenance are often determined by sea urchin grazing. The two sea urchin species Paracentrotus lividus and Arbacia lixula are considered to play a similar ecological role despite their differing morphological traits and diets. Defoliation and the availability of currently assimilated carbon in the Phleum pratense rhizosphere

Abstract It has been hypothesised that defoliation and aboveground herbivory increase the availability of currently assimilated C to organisms living in plant rhizospheres. We established a growth chamber experiment consisting of Phleum pratense individuals growing in sand culture to examine the short- and long-term effects of defoliation on the availability of current C assimilates in the P. pratense rhizosphere. Obligate mutualistic plant-ants are often constrained by their plant partner's capacity to provide resources. However, despite this limitation, some ant partners actively reject potential prey items and instead drop them from the plant rather than consuming them, leaving the ants entirely reliant on host plant-provided food, including that provided indirectly by the symbiotic scale insects that ants tend inside the plants. The grazing effects of the waterlily beetle Galerucella nymphaeae on Nuphar lutea stands were studied in three ponds in Central Finland. Production of floating leaves of N. lutea and growth in the G. nymphaeae population were investigated in the ponds and bioenergetics of the beetle larvae in the laboratory. Combination of field and laboratory data enabled estimation of the effect of the beetle on the production of floating leaves of N. lutea and the consequences of grazing for the input of detritus from Nuphar into the ponds.
