Erika Steinbach: The Last Charismatic Representative of the Expellees?
2015
International audience; This paper aims to show how Erika Steinbach, at the head of the BdV (Federation of Deportees) since 1998, has come to embody in person this large social group, in the eyes of the media and of various institutions. No stranger to controversy, she represents the hereditary German enemy in Poland (thus plaguing German diplomatic relations with the country) and is strongly rejected by certain parts of the population while being unconditionally supported by the deportees themselves. The ambiguous role played by this political figure will be shown through the analysis of quarrels surrounding the inauguration of a memorial to the deportees. Steinbach has been both the drivi…
Teaching heritage German and Russian through authentic material in Jyväskylä, Finland : A case study
2017
Since 2013, sixteen heritage language teachers in Jyväskylä, Finland, have been developing an Active Library (ActLib) method and an online cooperative learning forum designed to create and share authentic language learning material. The main objectives are twofold. Firstly, from the learner’s perspective, the aims are to enhance pupils’ language awareness while encouraging them to use their language repertoire as a resource in learning, to develop authentic activities, and to increase pupil agency. Secondly, from the teachers’ and education policy perspective, the aim is to prepare heritage language teachers to introduce in advance the new Finnish core curriculum. A further objective is to …
L’esprit de patrimoine
2010
2019
The attractiveness of a touristic area depends on the combination of "magnet resources" and other complementary resources. The authors applied the resource-based view approach to understand how a touristic district can enrich its attractiveness. Empirically, authors focus on the district of Sicilian Baroque. Authors also consider how informatics solutions - provided by NEPTIS Project - may increase the valorisation of magnet resources, such as the landscape and cultural heritage of the Baroque sites
Biology of the sauropod dinosaurs: the evolution of gigantism
2010
The herbivorous sauropod dinosaurs of the Jurassic and Cretaceous periods were the largest terrestrial animals ever, surpassing the largest herbivorous mammals by an order of magnitude in body mass. Several evolutionary lineages among Sauropoda produced giants with body masses in excess of 50 metric tonnes by conservative estimates. With body mass increase driven by the selective advantages of large body size, animal lineages will increase in body size until they reach the limit determined by the interplay of bauplan, biology, and resource availability. There is no evidence, however, that resource availability and global physicochemical parameters were different enough in the Mesozoic to ha…
Masks and carnivals in contemporary Sardinia
2020
The carnival occupies an important place in Sardinia, and attracts the attention of scholars with its continuously renewed meanings and functions. Furthermore, the institution of carnival is one of the cultural traits that has most oriented enhancement, research, re-proposal, revitalization of spontaneous groups and cultural associations: local traditions are re-learned and reworked along with specific identities and new forms of expression. In this sense, we can speak of new carnivals; cultural heritage in new economic and social contexts. In other words: today’s representations and masks refer to an alleged tradition to respond to contemporary needs and requests. In the case of Sardinian …

A Note on Cultural Policies of Safeguard of Traditional Heritage. The Sicilian case
2021
This paper focuses on an experience of cooperation between the University of Palermo (along with the Universities of Catania and Messina) and the Department of Cultural Heritage, Natural Heritage and Public Education of the Regional Government that took place in Sicily (Italy) at the end of 1970s. A model of good practice based on the relationship “culture and development” that allows us to evaluate the short, medium and long-term effects of this approach on our territory looking at the domain of cultural heritage.
Motivation and Preferences of Visitors in the Bohemian Paradise UNESCO Global Geopark
2021
There are some localities in the Bohemian Paradise Geopark that suffer from temporal overtourism in the high season. On the other hand, more than half of the geopark is not so often visited by tourists, although very attractive geosites can be found there too. In the most visited localities, nature is damaged due to overloading of the tourist infrastructure, while elsewhere there is pressure driven by municipalities to increase the number of tourists. For this reason, we organized a large questionnaire survey in summer 2020, which aimed to reveal the motivation of visitors of the geopark and their preferences regarding the places visited. The questionnaire combined several research methods:…
La Torre della Marina di Vietri sulla Costa d’Amalfi: test statistico-predittivi di dati fotogrammetrici
2020
The Tower of Marina di Vietri on Amalfi Coast: a statistical-predictive test of photogrammetric dataThe focus of the work is on close-range photogrammetry and mainly on the low-cost technologies, experimented in the survey of Tower of Marina di Vietri, a historical building erected in the sixteenth century at Vietri sul Mare in the Province of Salerno. The general objective is to codify a methodology for objectifying the comparisons of the results; hence, the research starts from an original analysis conducted on the returned orthophotos by several photogrammetric paradigms. To estimate its reliability and precision, we proceeded, at first, with the extension and application of an error pro…
