Municipal Integrated Coastal Management Facilitation in Latvia: Piloting Public Multi-Thematical Monitoring

2021

This paper contains a pilot study on coastal values and potential means of determining and characterising them in the terms of coastal planning and management. The research case study took place in the coastal region of North East Latvia – in the municipality of Salacgriva. The municipality coast is very diverse: coastal access, landscape and the whole biogeography is changing very much along the whole 54 km, being also rich in various natural and cultural heritage assets. Such great coastal variety in the limits of one administrative territory does require very selective governance approaches and dynamic management to be realized by local administration, which has very limited necessary ca…

Opra i pupi siciliana: Masterpiece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity

2014

In the first decades of the nineteenth century a form of puppet theater was established in Sicily, specialized in the staging of epic-chivalrous events: the opra î pupi (work of the puppets), which has since enjoyed enormous success among the working classes Sicilians. The work of the pupi has the merit of imploding an articulated complex of traditionally formalized competences (from the material to the expressive level) and at the same time reflecting the socio-symbolic values on which until recently the Sicilian popular culture was founded. For this reason, in 2001, the title of "Masterpiece of the oral and intangible heritage of humanity" was recognized by UNESCO. The central role attr…

2020

The work focuses on the relation between typical food and insularity, through a semiotics analysis of Sicilian cookbooks for anglophone readers. Following this there is a recap on the semiotics approach towards cookbooks and on the several elements involved in this kind of text analysis such as spatial, historical, political and translational factors. Secondly, we analyze a group of Sicilian cookbooks, published for the international market, highlighting their cartographical constru…

Foreign (In)Direct Investment in Chinese Contemporary Art Game: The Case Studies of Uli Sigg, Guy Ullens and beyond, 1989-2013

2021

The boom in Chinese contemporary art is the result of China’s opening to foreign investment and private entrepreneurship in 1978, and the significant contribution by the transnational art enterprises of long-term patron-investor-collectors, such as Uli Sigg and Guy Ullens, between approximately 1989 and 2013. Through the opportunity offered by the gap between the private market mechanism and national heritage process for the “art game”, these investors used a variation of the controversial “Saatchi model” to generate high ROI. A further effect has been to bring CCA onto the global stage and complete the ecosystem of the art industry, building a foundation for the art economy of post-Mao Chi…

Silk Road Museums: Design of Inclusive Heritage and Cross-Cultural Education

2021

This work is the result of a study on the characteristics that define some of the museums created on the Silk Road. The approach to these museums has focused especially on the observation of the educational and heritage aspects that define these institutions. Since 1988, numerous actions related to the Silk Road have been promoted by UNESCO. This old trade route has now become a route of dialogue between cultures. Each museum studied is characterized by promoting local and national issues that define it. Educational issues stand out, since the tradition of silk production is very important in each place. Another aspect observed is that heritage issues manage to strengthen the characteristic…

Nuclear Magnetic Resonance for Cultural Heritage

2007

Abstract Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) portable devices are now being used for nondestructive in situ analysis of water content, pore space structure and protective treatment performance in porous media in the field of cultural heritage. It is a standard procedure to invert T 1 and T 2 relaxation data of fully water-saturated samples to get “pore size” distributions, but the use of T 2 requires great caution. It is well known that dephasing effects due to water molecule diffusion in a magnetic field gradient can affect transverse relaxation data, even if the smallest experimentally available half echo time τ is used in Carr–Purcell–Meiboom–Gill experiments. When a portable single-sided N…

Narrare la generatività familiare

2018

The author proposes a short reflection on the training of the emotional system of the subject; that is a pedagogically relevant theme because it allows to comprehend the first emotional literacy that happens in family. It also helps to explore the…

XI-X cal BC.
