Application of a polymer-based photocatalytic coating for the protection of limestone stones substrates: an exposure study

2022

In the last decades there have been several studies on cultural heritage regarding the performance of protective and consolidating coatings for the prevention of decay. A coating must have several characteristics such as: efficiency, breathability, and must be durable and reversible. In this research work we tried to verify the performance of a commercial protective product such as Fosbuild FBLE 200, which is composed of a TiO2 nanopowder dispersed in an aqueous solution of an acrylic polymer. This product, which exhibits depolluting, antimicrobial, water-repellent and self-cleaning characteristics, has been applied on different lithotypes such as: Carrara marble, Noto and Comiso stone and …

GeoHeritage-GIS: il sito web del patrimonio monumentale del Centro Storico di Palermo

2009

Abstract GeoHeritage-GIS (GH-GIS), a web site concerning Palermo Historic Centre monumental Heritage, developed within Project 7T7 Cluster C29, funded by MIUR, has been designed as a permanent interface between who studies the hazard factors interesting this area and a vast category of final users which operate to safeguard Palermo Monumental Heritage, a very precious common weal. These end-users will benefit from homogeneously collected, frequently improved and periodically updated data concerning soil properties, seismic effects and all of that can help to define the hazard exposition of each monument, having an important tool in establishing a scale of priorities for interventions and re…

Common stock as innovation enabling platforms

2019

The huge wealth of properties that we have built in many years in our cities and peripheries, convinced that it was capable of generating value, today is largely degraded, underused or disused but it represents a stock of heritage that could be fundamental to feed a dynamic and flexible view of legacy capable to influence our design culture. The challenge presented is how to shift the development asset from real estate capitalization to a knowledge economy where disused assets are offered as common stocks and enabling platforms for collective actions.

The power of fiction in times of crisis: movie-tourism and heritage planning in “Montalbano’s places”

2015

The current economic crisis, and its effects on the European sovereign debt, has resulted in asignificant reduction in Italian investments in the field of preservation and enhancement of cultural heritage and landscape. In fragile contexts, such as Sicily, the contraction of investments has put further into crisis the already weak management and planning system. Despite this scenario of crisis, in South-Eastern Sicily, the province of Ragusa shows a significant resilience to the crisis also due to the "effect Montalbano" and the capability to rethink the traditional heritage policies (Magazzino & Mantovani, 2012). The paper, based on the analysis of the case study of South-East Sicily, refl…

Integration of high resolution spatial and spectral data acquisition systems to provide complementary datasets for cultural heritage applications

2010

International audience; Modern optical measuring systems are able to record objects with high spatial and spectral precision. The acquisition of spatial data is possible with resolutions of a few hundredths of a millimeter using active projection-based camera systems, while spectral data can be obtained using filter-based multispectral camera systems that can capture surface spectral reflectance with high spatial resolution. We present a methodology for combining data from these two discrete optical measuring systems by registering their individual measurements into a common geometrical frame. Furthermore, the potential for its application as a tool for the non-invasive monitoring of painti…

Design, agro-food and cultural heritage for sustainable local economy development

2016

The aim of this paper is to describe, using the sustainable design process, the relationships between tourism, agro-food traditional products and cultural heritage to regenerate local development. For this purpose the study investigate the territory of Modica, a specific area in the south-east side of Sicily (province of Ragusa). The project is based on the approach of circular economy to enhance and use derivatives and waste of the selection process from the supply chain of Modica cottoia broad bean. The paper is divided in two sections one about the research step and the other about design step. The research step begins with the exploration and collection of information in order to examin…

Design per connettere. Persone, patrimoni, processi

2022

Dialogue in and as European heritage

2022

In this article, we scrutinize the use and institutionalization of the concept of ‘dialogue’ in the cultural politics of the European Union. Our focus is on how dialogue is understood in the context of the European Union’s flagship heritage action, the European Heritage Label, that aims to strengthen citizens’ sense of belonging to the Union. Since heritage has gained increasing prominence in the European Union international relations, we also discuss how ‘dialogue’ is institutionalized in the European Heritage Label as part of the European Union’s heritage diplomacy. We approach dialogue in the context of the European Heritage Label as a floating signifier; an ideal seldom explicitly defi…

Introducing Teenagers to a Dialogue with Judaism as the Task of School Catechesis

2014

This analysis proves that introducing teenagers to a dialogue with Judaism is one of catechesis’s tasks. This task has been outlined in the post-conciliar documents of the Catholic Church. It underlines the spiritual ties between Catholic people and the Jews and promotes forming an attitude of openness towards followers of the Mosaic religion. It also contributes to mitigating anti-Semitism among Catholic teenagers. At the same time, it raises interest in Jewish traditions and culture. In the religion syllabus in lower and post-secondary schools we can come across numerous references (mainly indirect) to Judaism. The focus on passing honest knowledge about Judaism can be also clearly visibl…
