Long-Term Results of Fixation-Free Incisional Hernia Repair Using a Tentacle-Shaped Implant
2017
INTRODUCTION: The fixation and the overlap of the mesh represent an open issue in incisional hernia repair. An exclusively designed prosthesis has been developed to assure a suture-free repair and a broader coverage of the abdominal wall. This study describes the long-term results of incisional hernia procedures carried out positioning a tentacle-shaped implant through a specifically developed surgical technique. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A proprietary symmetrically-shaped flat mesh constituted by a large central body with integrated radiating arms was used to repair incisional hernias in 68 patients. The prosthesis was placed in preperitoneal/retromuscular sublay. The friction of the straps p…
Effect of Fibrin Sealant on Seroma Formation Post-Incisional Hernia Repair
2020
Background: Development of seroma after incisional hernia repair is a common complication. Our study aims to compare the outcomes of sublay incisional hernia repairs with or without spray instillation of fibrin glue. Methods: We enrolled fifty patients undergoing incisional hernia repair. In all patients a suction drain was placed in the subcutaneous space. In one group (FG) 4 ml fibrin glue was instilled in the subcutaneous space. In the control group (C) patients did not receive any prevention measure. Wounds fluids were collected on post-operative day 1 (POD) and once daily until drain removal. All patients were followed up by ultrasound on POD 15, 20, 40, 60. Results: Drain fluid produc…
COMPARING THE BIOLOGICAL RESPONSE OF CONVENTIONAL STATIC MESHES AND DYNAMIC RESPONSIVE IMPLANTS
2015
Introduction: Inguinal hernia repair represent one of the most performed surgical procedure in the world. Notwithstanding the progress in prosthetic material and surgical procedures, the rate of complications remains high. Actually, chronic pain and discomfort are often source of debate among herniologists. Poor quality of tissue incorporation, such as stiff scar plaque leading to mesh shrinkage, is the typical results of conventional static implants that may lead to these adverse events. Recently, a new type of prosthesis, a 3D dynamic responsive implant, was introduced to the market. This device, designed to be positioned fixation-free, seems to induce the development of viable and more s…
Grynfeltt-Lesshaft hernia Personal experience of nine cases and a review of the literature
2022

An Uncommon Case of Adolescent Ovarian Teratoma Incarcerated in Inguinal Hernia
2016
Mature cystic teratoma is the most frequent benign ovarian neoplastic lesion in adolescents and is generally composed of fully differentiated tissue arising from multipotential three germinal layers. It accounts for approximately 50% of benign ovarian tumors in childhood. Rarely, a bilateral, synchronous, or metachronous presentation can be observed, supporting a conservative approach as the first surgical approach. We report a case of an ovarian mature cystic incarcerated in indirect inguinal hernia in a 15-year-old girl undergoing ovary-sparing surgery. To our knowledge this is the first case of such lesion incarcerated in an inguinal hernia reported in literature. Mature cystic teratoma …
Lipoma of the fossa femoralis mimicking a femoral hernia. Report of 2 cases
2018
Highlights • Femoral lipoma can be mistaken with femoral hernia. • Differential diagnosis between femoral lipoma and femoral hernia can result challenging. • The occurrence of femoral pain can lead to misinterpretation of the symptoms.
Closed Incision Negative Pressure Therapy Achieves Better Outcome Than Standard Wound Care: Clinical Outcome and Cost-Effectiveness Analysis in Open …
2020
BackgroundSurgical site infections (SSIs) and surgical site occurrences (SSOs) are frequent post-operative complications that are dependent on the presence of different risk factors. The use of closed incision negative pressure therapy (ciNPT) is considered a measure by the WHO guidelines for prevention of SSIs. The prevention of SSOs is an extremely important issue in the ventral hernia repair (VHR) surgical field. SSO onset not only affects the patient's quality of life, but can also cause the onset of life-threatening conditions that may require re-hospitalization, re-intervention and often mesh removal. Such outcome can become extremely costly, contributing to increased health care cost…
Open versus laparoscopic approach in the treatment of abdominal emergencies in elderly population
2016
AIM: To evaluate the role of laparoscopy in the treatment of surgical emergency in old population. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Over-70 years-old patients submitted to emergency abdominal surgery from January 2013 to December 2014 were collected and grouped according to admission diagnoses. These accounted small bowel obstruction, colonic acute disease, appendicitis, ventral hernia, gastro-duodenal perforation, biliary disease. In each group it was analyzed the operation time (OT), the morbidity rate and the mortality rate comparing open and laparoscopic management using T-test and Chi-square test. RESULTS: 159 over 70-years-old patients underwent emergency surgery in the General and Emergency sur…
