Merit-based exclusion in Finnish music schools

In this article I analyse merit-based exclusion in Finnish music schools for children and young people. I base my study on my earlier research on meritocracy and written data collected online from current and former music school students in the autumn and winter of 2015–2016. I am able to show there are implicit and explicit merit-based hierarchies in the music school. Hierarchies and exclusion are shown to be connected to the institution’s meritocratic features. Distributed leadership in Finnish and Shanghai schools

The present research employed mixed-methods approach to further theorise distributed leadership and to investigate its manifestations in Finnish and Shanghai schools. The whole research comprised two phases. The first phase contained a meta-analysis (Sub-study I), which systematically reviewed 85 key distributed leadership articles published between 2002 and 2013. The meta-analysis identified two main research paradigms: the descriptive-analytical paradigm and the prescriptive-normative paradigm. In this article, we examine the hierarchization of international students by bringing together perspectives of linguistic legitimacy and language ideologies. Our data stems from 26 accent reduction (AR) or accent modification (AM) course descriptions and websites from US universities. Based on their analysis, we discuss the socio-political implications of the phenomenon of these courses for international students and the ways in which language-based, particularly accent-based, arguments are used to create or reinforce different categories of students. Many universities in non-English speaking countries have been adopting English as a medium of instruction to internationalize their education. We set out to compare the language policies of a Finnish and a Japanese university using the lens of language ideology – a set of normative beliefs about the social dimension of language. Tämä tutkimus keskittyi tutkimaan tagien käyttöä muutamassa tagipalveluihin erikoistuneessa sosiaalisessa verkkosivustossa. Tutkimuksen aikana huomattiin, että tageja hyödynnetään hyvin monipuolisesti näissä sivustoissa osana käyttäjälle tarjottavaa palvelukokonaisuutta: tärkeimpinä palveluina tarjottiin palveluun lisättävien objektien tagaamisen lisäksi tagisuosituksia, tagihakuja ja sosiaalista verkkotoimintaa palvelun käyttäjien kesken.
