Optically Probed Laser-Induced Field-Free Molecular Alignment

2011

Molecular alignment induced by laser fields has been investigated in research laboratories for over two decades. It led to a better understanding of the fundamental processes at play in the interaction of strong laser fields with molecules, and also provided significant contributions to the fields of high harmonic generation, laser spectroscopy, and laser filamentation. In this chapter, we discuss molecular alignment produced under field-free conditions, as resulting from the interaction of a laser pulse of duration shorter than the rotational period of the molecule. The experimental results presented will be confined to the optically probed alignment of linear as well as asymmetric top mol…

Third-harmonic generation in the skin layer of a hot dense plasma

2003

The third-harmonic generation of a pump wave, resulting from the electron-ion collision frequency dependence on the electric field in the skin layer of a hot dense plasma is investigated. The relation of the current third harmonic with the high-frequency field in the skin layer is established for arbitrary ratios of the electron-ion collision frequency to the field frequency. For arbitrary ratios of these two frequencies, the field structure inside the skin layer is determined, and the field of the wave irradiated by the plasma at tripled frequency, too, is calculated. It has permitted us to find the explicit dependencies of the third-harmonic generation efficiency on the plasma and pump fi…

Graphene in strong laser field: experiment and theory

2015

The interaction of graphene nanoparticles and strong 64 fs pulses is examined. We demonstrate high-order harmonic generation in the plasma contained in crumpled sheets of graphene. The morphological studies of the debris of ablated graphene, application of single-color and two-color pumps of graphene-containing plasma, and theoretical consideration of the high-order harmonic generation in this medium are presented.

Development of two-color resonance ionization scheme for Th using an automated wide-range tunable Ti:sapphire laser system

2018

Two-color resonance ionization schemes of Th were investigated by an automated wide-range tunable, grating-assisted Ti:Sa laser system with intracavity SHG option. A two-color ionization scheme via autoionizing state (1st step: 372.049 nm and 2nd step: 401.031 nm) was developed and its relative efficiency was lower by factor of three compared to a known three color scheme. peerReviewed

Guided-wave frequency doubling in surface periodically poled lithium niobate: competing effects

2007

We carried out second-harmonic generation in quasi-phase-matched ? -phase lithium niobate channel waveguides realized by proton exchange and surface periodic poling. Owing to a limited ferroelectric domain depth, we could observe the interplay between second-harmonic generation and self-phase modulation due to cascading and cubic effects, resulting in a nonlinear resonance shift. Data reduction allowed us to evaluate both the quadratic nonlinearity in the near infrared as well as the depth of the uninverted domains. © 2007 Optical

Wavelength tuning of femtosecond pulses generated in nonlinear crystals by using diffractive lenses

2010

We demonstrate that diffractive lenses (DLs) can be used as a simple method to tune the central wavelength of femtosecond pulses generated from second-order nonlinear optical processes in birefringent crystals. The wavelength tunability is achieved by changing the relative distance between the nonlinear crystal and the DL, which acts in a focusing configuration. Besides the many practical applications of the so-generated pulses, the proposed method might be extended to other wavelength ranges by demonstrated similar effects on other nonlinear processes, such as high-order harmonic generation.

Towards CEP stable sub two cycle IR pulse compression with bulk material

2010

We demonstrate both experimentally and numerically that self-steepening during propagation in a hollow-fiber followed by linear propagation through glass in the anomalous dispersion enables pulse compression down to 1.9 cycles at 1.8 micron wavelength.

Light-Driven Extremely Nonlinear Bulk Photogalvanic Currents

2021

We predict the generation of bulk photocurrents in materials driven by bichromatic fields that arc circularly polarized and corotating. The nonlinear photocurrents have a fully controllable directionality and amplitude without requiring carrier-envelope-phase stabilization or few-cycle pulses, and can be generated with photon energies much smaller than the band gap (reducing heating in the photoconversion process). We demonstrate with ab initio calculations that the photocurrent generation mechanism is universal and arises in gaped materials (Si, diamond, MgO, hBN), in semimetals (graphene), and in two- and three-dimensional systems. Photocurrents are shown to rely on sub-laser-cycle asymme…

Harmonic generation from nanorings driven by a two-color laser field

2014

We study the high harmonic generation and the polarization of the harmonics emitted by a nanoring driven by two laser fields of angular frequency ?1 and ?2, with ?2?=?2?1, and ?1 resonant between the ground and the first excited state. We show that by varying parameters, such as laser intensity, photon energy and the delay between the two laser pulses, we can control the number of harmonics and the polarization of the radiation. In particular we show that with this choice of two-laser photon frequency rate we obtain more harmonics with respect to other configurations. We also calculated the average absorbed energy and the average angular momentum acquired by the electron as a function of th…
