A rational runoff coefficient for a revisited rational formula
2019
The Rational Formula (RF) is probably the most frequently applied equation in practical hydrology to compute the peak discharge, due to its simplicity and effective compromise between theory and data availability. Thus, after more than a century, the estimation of peak discharge through the RF is still an important and challenging issue in hydrology. The RF assumes response linearity and sometimes assumes that the return period does not depend on the runoff coefficient and neglects the time to ponding and the antecedent moisture condition. Moreover, the RF requires the critical duration of rainfall and the runoff coefficient to be estimated, both of which are highly controversial. This pape…
Brief an Garlieb H. Merkel
1798

Lectotypification of Three Linnaean Names in the GeneraPhillyreaandFraxinus(Oleaceae)
2014
Lectotypes for the Linnaean names Phillyrea angustifolia, P. media and Fraxinus ornus (Oleaceae), are designated from original material conserved in LINN (Linnaean Herbarium) and BM (George Clifford Herbarium). A specimen at BM is designated here as the second-step lectotype of the name Fraxinus ornus.
Increasing Cold Tolerance of Cactus Pear Fruit by High-Temperature Conditioning and Film Wrapping
2017
Pre-storage high-temperature conditioning (HTC, 38 °C, and 95% RH for 24 h) and individual film wrapping (IFW) with a perforated polyolefinic heat-shrinkable film were used as individual treatments or in combination to mitigate chilling injury of first crop cactus pear cv âGiallaâ. The fruit was stored for 21 days at either 2 or 8 °C (CS) plus 1 week of simulated marketing conditions (SMC) at 20 °C. The reduction in peel disorders and decay in HTC-treated fruit stored at 2 °C was comparable to that detected in control fruit stored at 8 °C. IFW was more efficient than HTC in reducing peel disorders, almost completely inhibited weight loss, and preserved freshness in fruit st…
Modeling the hydrological and mechanical effect of roots on shallow landslides
2016
This study proposes a new methodology for estimating the additional shear strength (or cohesion) exerted by vegetation roots on slope stability analysis within a coupled hydrological-stability model. The mechanical root cohesion is estimated within a Fiber Bundle Model framework that allows for the evaluation of the root strength as a function of stress-strain relationships of populations of fibers. The use of such model requires the knowledge of the root architecture. A branching topology model based on Leonardo's rule is developed, providing an estimation of the amount of roots and the distribution of diameters with depth. The proposed methodology has been implemented into an existing dis…
A review of runoff generation and soil erosion across scales in semiarid south-eastern Spain
2011
Climate, lithology, soil and especially, intense land use/cover changes, make SE Spain very vulnerable to runoff generation and water erosion leading to loss of nutrients and organic matter and to infrequent but devastating floods, reservoir siltation and mass failures. This susceptibility has led to heavy economic investment and research efforts since the 1980s, making this region a worldwide reference for understanding the hydrology and geomorphology of semiarid ecosystems. Runoff and soil erosion have been intensively studied throughout the last decades in various natural ecosystems as well as in abandoned farmlands. Research has considered a wide range of methods and spatial and tempora…
Monitoring soil volume wetness in heterogeneous soils by electrical resistivity. A field-based pedotransfer function.: A field-based pedotransfer fun…
2014
11 pages; International audience; Modern irrigation techniques require accurate, rapid, cost-effective, spatial measurement of soil moisture. Electrical Resistivity Tomography (ERT) meets most of these requirements, but needs to be calibrated for each use because it is very sensitive to differences in soil characteristics. In this study, a pedotransfer function approach is used to remove the need for site-specific calibration, allowing ERT to be used directly to measure soil moisture. The study site was a hillslope vineyard, where eight calcaric-cambisol soil profiles were identified. From 2012 to 2013, 23 000 soil volume wetness measurements were acquired by Time Domain Reflectometry, and …
Influence of the boundary conditions on heat and mass transfer in spacer-filled channels
2017
The purpose of this study is to discuss some problems which arise in heat or mass transfer in complex channels, with special reference to the spacer-filled channels adopted in membrane processes. Among the issues addressed are the consistent definition of local and mean heat or mass transfer coefficients; the influence of the wall boundary conditions; the influence of one-side versus two-side heat/mass transfer. Most of the results discussed were obtained by finite volume CFD simulations concerning heat transfer in Membrane Distillation or mass transfer in Electrodialysis and Reverse Electrodialysis, but many of the conclusions apply also to different processes involving geometrically compl…
Administración liberal y corrupción política: el conflicto del Real Colegio de San Pablo con el Instituto Provincial de Valencia
2015
The present paper examines the Spanish public schools inside the liberal educative system doing a detailed analysis of the Real Colegio de San Pablo of Valencia. The article studies this Real Colegio in order to point out the conflict provoked by political corruption, since Juan Bravo Murillo, a Spanish minister, appointed relatives to direction posts against the desires of Antonio Gil de Zárate, the founder of the Spanish liberal educative system. In this case, the struggle between personal interest of politicians and the necessities of the new and modern administration were related to the problematic issue of the model of high schools established by the State: elitist public schools or op…
