Fractional-order theory of thermoelasticicty. I: Generalization of the Fourier equation
2018
The paper deals with the generalization of Fourier-type relations in the context of fractional-order calculus. The instantaneous temperature-flux equation of the Fourier-type diffusion is generalized, introducing a self-similar, fractal-type mass clustering at the micro scale. In this setting, the resulting conduction equation at the macro scale yields a Caputo's fractional derivative with order [0,1] of temperature gradient that generalizes the Fourier conduction equation. The order of the fractional-derivative has been related to the fractal assembly of the microstructure and some preliminary observations about the thermodynamical restrictions of the coefficients and the state functions r…
Integrated thermodynamic and electrical modelling of a variable-speed reversible heat pump: analysis of the cooling mode operation
2022
Variable-speed reversible heat pumps are increasingly adopted for space heating and cooling in residential and tertiary sectors. It is recognized that these systems will play a key role in medium- and small-scale 4th generation district heating and cooling networks. Indeed, with the high penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources, such technology could help reduce issues related to the surplus of electricity from renewable energy sources by converting it into heat or cold. To reliably assess the benefits achievable in these emerging applications, it is necessary to develop models which can simulate not only the steady-state operation but also the dynamic response of the system wit…
Safety of micafungin in prospective and retrospective clinical trials
2012
Summary Managing fungal diseases remains a major challenge for clinicians despite the improved armamentarium of antifungal agents. This review identified 19 publications reporting safety data on micafungin. Two of these publications were spin off publications, the remaining 17 (15 prospective, two retrospective) were included in the main assessment. Major adverse events reported which occurred in more than 2% in the study populations were infusion-related, gastro-intestinal and hepatic (LFT parameters elevations). Micafungin demonstrated significantly less renal events compared with liposomal amphotericin B and less hepatic events compared with voriconazole. Compared with fluconazole no sig…
«All We Are Saying Is Give Pizza Chance»: L’effetto YBA e l’irruzione di una nuova generazione alle Biennali degli anni Novanta del Novecento
2019
The chapter addresses the rise of the Young British Artists (YBA) in their home country and their subsequent international spread during the 1990s as seen in connection with the Venice Biennale occurring between 1993 and 2003. Particularly, the author argues that the Aperto ’93 section devoted to young artists at the Arsenale for the 45th Biennale was an unexpected starting point for the YBAs on the global stage and their first Venetian appraisal convinced home institutions such as the British Council to finance a large program of international exhibitions for this new artistic generation. Throughout the 1990s the Biennale thus became a major stage for the rising YBAs, which in turn deeply …

Muscle-tendon morphomechanical properties of non-surgically treated Achilles tendon 1-year post-rupture
2022
Background\ud Achilles tendon rupture appears to alter stiffness and length of the tendon. These alterations may affect the function of tendon in force transmission and in energy storage and recovery. We studied the mechanical properties of the Achilles' tendon post-rupture and their association with function.\ud Methods\ud Twenty-four (20 males, 4 females) participants (mean age: 43 y, 176 cm, 81 kg) were recruited. Ultrasonography and dynamometry were used to assess the muscle-tendon unit morphological and mechanical properties of non-surgically treated patients 1-year post rupture.\ud Findings\ud Injured tendons were longer with difference of 1.8 cm (95%CI: 0.5–1.9 cm; P < 0.001), and th…
