Shakespeare, Art and Artifice: An Interview with Stuart Sillars

2019

Ahead of the publication of his forthcoming book, Shakespeare Seen: Image, Performance and Society (Cambridge, 2018), Stuart Sillars sat down for an interview with Perry McPartland. The discussion revisited a number of topics that Sillars has explored in his various publications on Shakespeare, including Shakespeare’s aesthetic strategies of transformation, the relationship his work takes to the visual, and the uses to which Shakespeare puts aesthetic artifice. The interview was conducted in two parts over a very nearly adequate Skype connection in the summer of 2018.

Multi-Chip RFID Antenna Integrating Shape-Memory Alloys for Detection of Thermal Thresholds

2011

Low-cost wireless measurement of objects' temperature is one of the greatest expectation of radiofrequency identification technology for the so many applications in cold supply-chain control and safety assessment in general. In this context, the paper proposes a dual-chip UHF tag embedding shape memory alloys (SMA) able to transform the variation of the tagged item's temperature into a permanent change of antenna radiation features. This event-driven antenna is hence able to selectively activate the embedded microchips according to the temperature above or below a given threshold. A general design methodology for the resulting two-ports tag antenna is here introduced and then applied to pro…

An assession of the applicability of shared leadership tenets in Cameroon : the case of Buea municipality

2016

Leadership is considered very pivotal in institutions and no single leader can boss of executing leadership alone. In spite of the fact that shared leadership ideology can be dated as far back as 1920s, there has been multitude of supposition regarding shared leadership tenets and how it can be enacted in institutions. The intent of this quantitative study is to assess the applicability of shared leadership, by unlocking the key enablers and barriers of shared leadership needed for school improvement in Cameroon. The study makes use of a questionnaire for data collection and samples the opinions of 207 school professionals from secondary and high schools in Buea Municipality, Cameroon. Afte…

Principals’ perceptions about collective competences in shared leadership contexts

2022

This article aims to understand how principals perceive collective competences in their schools’ shared leadership contexts. Collective competences are crucial in shared leadership but have not been widely explored within educational leadership studies. This study investigates collective competences through two intersected models: attribute and relational models. The data comprise interviews conducted with 12 Finnish principals in comprehensive and secondary schools who practiced shared modes of leadership. Due to the Finnish school culture emphasising collaboration, the principals were expected to be able to broadly consider the collective side of competences in their schools. The data wer…

Feasibility of a Responsibility-Based Leadership Training Program for Novice Physical Activity Instructors

2021

Most coaches and instructors would like to teach more than just sport skills to their athletes and children. However, to promote athletes’ or children’s holistic development and teach them to take responsibility and lead, requires the coaches and instructors to first master the skills themselves. Therefore, feasible, high quality leadership training programs where coaches and physical activity instructors are taught to teach and share leadership are needed. The aim of the current study was to evaluate the feasibility of a leadership training program to optimize it and to determine whether to proceed with its evaluation. In the leadership training program, eight Finnish novice physical activ…

Inhibition of denitrification and N2O emission by urine-derived benzoic and hippuric acid

2006

Abstract Hippuric acid (HA) in cattle urine acts as a natural inhibitor of soil N2O emissions. As HA concentration varies with diet, we determined critical HA levels. We also tested the hypothesis that the inhibition occurs because the HA breakdown product benzoic acid (BA) inhibits denitrification rates. During a 64-day incubation, we quantified emissions from artificial urine varying in HA, BA and glycine (Gly) concentrations, added to a sandy pasture soil. Increasing HA concentration from 0.4 to 5.6 mmol kg−1 soil significantly decreased the average N2O flux by 54%. At 3.9 mmol kg−1 soil, denitrification levels were 50% reduced for BA as compared to Gly. We conclude that HA inhibits both…

Shippers vs. freight forwarders: Do they differ in their port choice decisions? Evidence from the Spanish ceramic tile industry

2022

The present research aims to compare shippers’ and freight forwarders' port choice criteria in order to identify the main differences between these two decision-makers. Specifically, the research focuses on the port choice of the shippers belonging to the Spanish ceramic tile industry and the freight forwarders who manage their shipments. To do so, a mixed logit model is used with data obtained through a stated preference experiment. According to our results, shippers and freight forwarders differ only in the valuation of the cost attribute, with the latter being more cost-sensitive. Moreover, results indicate that freight forwarders are more conservative in their port choice decisions, as …

Niche position drives interspecific variation in occupancy and abundance in a highly-connected lake system

2019

Highlights • We studied interspecific variation in occupancy and abundance of freshwater species. • Occupancy and abundance correlated positively for both diatoms and macroinvertebrates. • Niche position had clearest effects on variation in occupancy and abundance. • The more marginal the niche position, the rarer a species is. We examined how niche position, niche breadth, biological traits and taxonomic relatedness affect interspecific variation in occupancy and abundance of two commonly-used biological indicator groups, i.e. diatoms and macroinvertebrates. We studied 291 diatom and 103 macroinvertebrate species that occupied the littoral zones of a large (305 km2) highly-connected freshw…
