Addressing Delicate and Variable Cancer Morphology in Spectral Histopathology Using Canine Visceral Hemangiosarcoma

2021

Spectral histopathology has shown promise for the classification and diagnosis of tumors with defined morphology, but application in tumors with variable or diffuse morphologies is yet to be investigated. To address this gap, we evaluated the application of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) imaging as an accessory diagnostic tool for canine hemangiosarcoma (HSA), a vascular endothelial cell cancer that is difficult to diagnose. To preserve the delicate vascular tumor tissue structure, and potential classification of single endothelial cells, paraffin removal was not performed, and a partial least square discrimination analysis (PLSDA) and Random Forest (RF) models to classify different tiss…

Application of remote online learning in oral histopathology teaching in China

2021

Background The aim of this study was to investigate the application of remote learning and virtual microscopy in oral histopathology teaching, a unique experience in China. The oral histopathology teaching in Nanjing Medical University has been extraordinary. Material and Methods 98 third-year dental students of Grade 2016 took oral histopathology theoretical course face-to-face in 2019 (Traditional group). The 94 participants of Grade 2017 took online oral histopathology course using digital methods(E-Learning platform and Virtual Simulation Experiment Teaching Center for Dentistry) in 2020. During the practical laboratory sessions, the students in both Traditional group and Online group o…

An experimental study on long term outcomes after magnetic esophageal compression anastomosis in piglets

2021

Abstract Background/Purpose Previous studies have shown that a patent, watertight esophageal anastomosis can be accomplished safely using specially-shaped magnets in piglets. However, it is unclear whether such a magnetic esophageal compression anastomosis (MECA) remains patent in the long-term. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the long-term outcome of MECA in an experimental pig model over an observation period of 2 months. Methods Ten piglets underwent creation of an MECA with custom-made 8 mm magnets and a U-shaped esophageal bypass loop to allow peroral nutrition at eight weeks of life. Two weeks later, the bypass loop was closed surgically, requiring the pigs to swallow via th…

Sex-specific reaction of liver ultrastructure in zebra fish (Brachydanio rerio) after prolonged sublethal exposure to 4-nitrophenol

1989

Abstract Morphological alterations of the liver of zebra fish ( Brachydanio rerio ) following prolonged exposure to 0.1, 1 and 5 mg · l −1 4-nitrophenol (4-NP) were investigated by means of light and electron microscopy. Based on marked sexual dimorphism in control animals, liver recactions were both sex- and dose-dependent. Whereas at 0.1 mg·1 −1 only minor changes could be revealed, there were numerous structural modifications at 1 mg·1 −1 : Whereas male fish primarily react with a proliferation of smooth endoplasmic reticulum, female fish display a high degree of fenetrastion within cisternate of the rough endoplasmic reticulum. Both sexes exhibit infiltration of macrophages and lymphocy…

An experimental study on magnetic esophageal compression anastomosis in piglets.

2019

Abstract Introduction Fashioning a patent, watertight anastomosis in patients with esophageal atresia is a challenging task in pediatric surgery, particularly when performed under tension. A reproducible suture-less alternative would decrease operative time. We evaluated magnetic esophageal compression anastomoses in a novel bypass-loop swine model. Methods Eight-week-old piglets underwent thoracotomy to mobilize the esophagus at the carina to create a U-shaped loop. Custom-made 8 mm diameter Neodymium Magnets were inserted into the esophagus proximal and distal to the loop, then mated side-to-side at the future anastomosis site. Pigs were observed for 8 (n = 4), 10 (n = 6), and 12 (n = 2) …

Undetected Malignancies of the Breast: Dynamic Contrast-enhanced MR Imaging at 1.0 T

2002

To assess the prevalence and characteristics of malignant breast lesions not identified with magnetic resonance (MR) imaging.Breast tissue specimens were obtained in 464 of 967 patients who had undergone dynamic gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted fast low-angle shot three-dimensional MR imaging of both breasts. A comparison of sensitivity, specificity, and predictive values of the prospectively recorded findings of mammography, ultrasonography (US), and MR imaging with the histopathologic results was performed with receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis. MR imaging examination findings that caused a false-negative diagnosis were reviewed to identify possible sources of error.Hi…

Comparison of the therapeutic effects of the dietary and topical forms of Zizyphus jujuba extract on oral mucositis induced by 5-fluorouracil: a gold…

2014

Background: Oral mucositis (OM) is a common inflammatory complication among cancerous patients as an ad verse effect of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects and identify the appropriate route of administration of extract of Zizyphus jujuba in 5-flurouracile induced OM induction in golden hamster. Materials and Methods: In a prospective randomized double blind animal study, OM was induced in 56 male golden hamsters by 5-FU (60 mg/kg) on days 0, 5, and 10 of the study. The cheek pouch was scratched with a sterile needle on once daily on days 3 and 4. On days 14-17, 300 mg/kg dietary and 20% Z. jujuba gel and gel base groups were treated and then com…

T1078 The Validity of a Biomarker Method for Indirect Detection of Gastric Mucosal Atrophy Versus Standard Histopathology

2008

Background Atrophy of the stomach mucosa is considered to be premalignant lesion for gastric cancer development; easy identification of this condition from a blood-sample would allow identifying the group of individuals at increased risk for cancer development.

Soft tissue myoepithelial carcinoma with rhabdoid-like features andEWSR1rearrangement: Fine needle aspiration cytology with histologic correlation

2015

A new case of soft tissue myoepithelial carcinoma (MEC) with rhabdoid-like differentiation is presented including cytologic, histopathologic, immunohistochemical, and molecular biologic features. A 45-year-old woman was admitted to the Hospital with nodular mass involving the lower part of the abdominal wall. Fine-needle aspiration cytology showed a round cell tumor with abundant cytoplasm in the myxoid background. The nuclei were uniform, round to ovoid, with finely distributed chromatin, nucleoli, and pale, vacuolated, or eosinophilic cytoplasm with rhabdoid-like appearance resembling a soft tissue malignant rhabdoid tumor. The surgically removed tumor was poorly demarcated, yellow, soft,…
