The promotion of the historical, cultural, and landscape heritage - Active citizenship
2017
In Italy, the management of the historic, artistic, cultural and landscape heritage and the issues related to its conservation and sustainability are an increasingly urgent issue to discuss, especially in light of the economic crisis of recent years. The policy, in the past, has focused mainly on large restorations, neglecting investments in conservation, an improved accessibility to the heritage, the dissemination of good practices for the protection and maintenance of the same, the enhancement of the landscape. Moreover, to make matters worse, the continuous risk of deterioration, caused by environmental conditions of the context in which the assets are located, and the lack of appropriat…
Tributo al professor Miguel F. Refojo, PhD, DSc (1928---2016)
2016
[Excerpt] July 21, 2016, Professor Miguel F. Refojo passed away at the age of 88 in Needham (Massachusetts). Saying that Miguel was one of the most renowned Spanish scientists of the second half of the XXth Century does not resembles its actual scientific size. Indeed, Miguel (or “Migüel” as most of his American friends pronounced his name) was a World Class scientist and inventor that will be forever linked to the advances in polymer science applied to the ophthalmic environment. His contributions in the biomedical field start “officially” in 1967 according to the National Library of Medline database (Pubmed-Medline). [...]
Plant facilitation and phylogenetics
2013
The relationship between facilitation and evolutionary ecology is poorly understood. We review five issues elucidating how the phylogenetic relatedness of species provides insight into the role of facilitation in community assembly: (a) Are the facilitative interactions more common between species that differ in a regeneration niche? (b) Are facilitative interactions more common between distantly related species? (c) Do communities governed by facilitation (rather than competition) have higher phylogenetic diversity? (d) As facilitated juvenile plants mature, do they compete with their nurses more often if they are closely related to them? (e) How does the phylogenetic signature in a commun…

Un acquisto da farsi prudenter et sine strepitu: l’arrivo in Vaticana di manoscritti e stampati del Collegio Romano all’inizio del XX secolo
2022
Based on a series of unpublished documents found in the Vatican Library and in the Vatican Archive, this article reconstructs the purchase in 1912 of manuscripts and printed books of the Collegium Romanum by the Vatican Library, during the papacy of Pius X. The purchase negotiations, which took place between June and July 1912, involved the praepositus and the consultor of the Roman province of the Jesuits, Augusto Spinetti and Pietro Tacchi Venturi, and the prefect of the Vatican Library, the Jesuit Franz Ehrle. The volumes arrived in the Vatican Library via the Jesuit novitiate of Villa Torlonia in Castel Gandolfo, where the manuscripts and books were transferred from the Collegium Romanu…

Educación XX1 : revista de la Facultad de Educación
2018
Blending the Erotic and the Divine in Mystical Literature
2004
THE BEGINNINGS OF SYMBOLIC-RELIGIOUS COGNITION - Cognitive Archeology and Cognitive Fluidity: About 30,000 years ago (70,000 years after the fossil records of the anatomically modern human), religious thought and symbolic conceptual activity arose from the capacity of integrating specific-domain a process called "cognitive fluidity" (Mithen 1996). Metaphor, Anthropomorphism and Cognitive Science: Metaphor is a basic mental capacity by which people understand themselves and the world around them through conceptual mappings of knowledge between mental spaces, using everyday knowledge to reason about more abstract concepts. Of all the templates for supernatural concepts, the ones that seriousl…
The text deals with the birth of scientific interests towards extra-western musical traditions thanks to the new discipline called "comparative musicology" and to ethno-anthropological studies of evolutionist and diffusionist orientation. In this context of study, particular importance is given…
RETROFITTING DETENTION BUILDINGS OF HISTORICAL-CULTURAL INTEREST. A CASE STUDY IN ITALY
2021
Penitentiary buildings in Italy include many buildings of undoubted historical and architectural importance. These have been, or will soon be, subject to structural changes necessary to adapt their spaces to the current regulations of prisons. The idea of punishment itself has changed over the centuries, so it is a physiological necessity to adapt existing buildings accordingly. When, however, such buildings date back centuries, they should not be considered a mere container but a historical testimony rich in meaning for the entire nation. The characteristics of the materials, distribution, and what these buildings have represented for the city should be the object of study and protection, …
