"AGRIGENTO. TOURISM AND TERRITORY: RESOURCES, NEW INSTITUTIONAL ACTORS AND PROJECT PROPOSALS" "Agrigento: turismo e territorio tra risorse, nuovi att…
2010
Agrigento constitutes one of Italy’s most problematic situations, exhibiting the most striking contrasts: the Valley of the Temples site’s wealth of landscapes and archaeological treasures and a widespread and varied practice of unauthorized building; the beauty and degradation of the city’s historic center besieged by inappropriately tall constructions; the elegance of the 19th century expansion and the growth of abject suburban developments; invasive road works that do not ensure efficient transit. In the sloping area that overlooks the sea, the Valley of the Temples Park is located, an exceptional mix of archaeological treasures and agricultural landscapes, but spoilt in many areas by va…
Preservation of the artistic heritage within the seat of the Chancellorship of the University of Palermo
2006
The correct maintenance of artworks of historical and artistic value requires a wide and detailed analysis of all the information relevant for preserving them, such as identification of the main deterioration factors, knowledge of the climatic history of the object, set-up of measuring methods and statistics of the guide parameters, and definition of a set of recommended environmental aspects to be controlled within a stable climate condition linked to the particular kind of object or its surface. In Italy, the basic laws UNI 10829 and UNI 10969 impose a reference methodology for the in-field measurement and data analysis. This paper reports the first results of a measuring campaign, carrie…
The vegetation for mitigating the microclimate and designing livable and healthy public spaces in Palermo City Centre
2018
Urban morphology and increasing building density play a key role in the overall heat and energy balance of our cities. The urban environment and CO2 emissions resulting from human activities cause a local increase of temperature, a phenomenon known as Urban Heat Island (UHI). This is also due to the reduction of vegetation in urban areas. The benefits that green spaces have in urban planning have been widely acknowledged. In particular, in temperate and hot contexts, plants help to reduce the extreme summer temperatures, improving people’s outdoor and indoor thermal comfort and, at the same time, reducing the buildings’ energy demand for cooling. The way plants affect urban climates is gene…
The Harvesting Memories Project: Historical ecology and landscape changes of the Sicani Mountains in Sicily
2022
The Harvesting Memories project aims to investigate the historical landscape dynamics in an inner area of the Sicani Mountains district in Western Sicily (Contrada Castro, Corleone-Palermo). The interdisciplinary approach of the project allowed us to combine and integrate methods from different disciplines such as historical ecology, landscape archaeology, archaeobotany and GIS-based spatial analysis. In this paper some results have been summarized. The comparison between land mosaic change during the last 60 years, the relationship between site catchment area and land suitability and the correlation between archaeobotanical and phytosociological data. This approach underlined the relevance…

Rebuilding Palermo in the Middle Ages: A Virtual Approach
2020
A long sequence of demolitions, transformations, interpretative restorations eliminated or compromised a series of civil and religious buildings built between the XII and early XVI centuries in Palermo. For many of these architectures, graphic, photographic and documentary evidence exists and can be found. Within an extensive project of the Department of Architecture of the University of Palermo, based on the collaboration between different disciplines, we intend to offer an essay of the possible results that the synergy between historical research and representation can offer. Chosen case is a fifteenth-century civil building located in the San Francesco district, of which some fragments r…

RIFIUTI E CITTA' STORICA. IL PAESAGGIO URBANO E L’IMPATTO DELLE SOLUZIONI TECNOLOGICHE
2019
Circular management of resource flows is an operational problem that appears with greater severity in an historical urban landscape due to the constraints generated by road fabrics and by the need to protect its values. It often happens that the degradation generated by the irresolute nature of the technical-environmental issues related to the service management, affects both the vulnerability of the historical city characters and the involvement of different actors. Here, we present the results of a research work that, through a case study, develops the experimentation of a methodology that identifies criteria for a waste collection system planning in an urban landscape of high historical …
