Professional identity in relation to vocational teachers’ work : an identity-centred approach to professional development

This paper reports a study on teachers’ professional identity and work in vocational education. The findings showed that vocational teachers’ work included vocational teaching within the school, developmental work, technology-enhanced work, professional duties outside the school, and educational duties within the school. Furthermore, the study revealed the harmonious and tensioned relationships between these elements of the work and teachers’ identities. Recognition of the nuanced nature of these relationships provides a perspective for promoting teachers’ professional development. Artikkelissa tarkastellaan lukion historian opettajien käsityksiä aineistopohjaisen esseen arvioinnista ja siihen vaikuttavista piirteistä tiedonalan tekstitaitojen näkökulmasta. Aineisto koostuu opettajien ryhmähaastatteluista ja lukiolaisten kirjoittamista aineistopohjaisista esseistä. Haastattelut analysoitiin laadullisen sisällönanalyysin avulla ja esseiden kielellisiä piirteitä systeemis-funktionaalisen kieliteorian avulla. Analyysissä keskityttiin opettajien arvostamiin esseen piirteisiin ja niiden kielellisiin toteumiin. The purpose of this study is to describe the genre of an expository history essay. The data consist of 52 document-based essays that were written as a part of a history exam at a Finnish general upper secondary school. In this article, I analyse the functional structure of these essays using genre-theoretical move-analysis in a framework of genre theories and disciplinary literacies. Three different moves and six steps were found. The communicative functions of these structural elements were to contextualize the historical content of the essays, to analyse historical documents, and to use the analysis for supporting the chosen argument. The article addresses the role of the essay in Hannah Arendt’s theorizing. By paying attention to Arendt’s style, we are better able to draw the full conclusions from the well-known fact that she was not a system-builder but took her bearings from concrete experiences. First, the concept of experience—too often taken at face value—is explicated. It is argued that Arendt’s understanding of the concept cannot be reduced to her personal experiences, but must be read against the background of the common world. Tensions between the people and parliament over representation are a normal feature of representative democracies. In this paper, we demonstrate how digital humanities analysis tools help in answering questions about the timing of debates on popular representation, tensions over its realization, and representatives’ changing perceptions on their parliamentary role.
