Mass testing and characterization of 20-inch PMTs for JUNO
2022
Main goal of the JUNO experiment is to determine the neutrino mass ordering using a 20 kt liquid-scintillator detector. Its key feature is an excellent energy resolution of at least 3% at 1 MeV, for which its instruments need to meet a certain quality and thus have to be fully characterized. More than 20,000 20-inch PMTs have been received and assessed by JUNO after a detailed testing program which began in 2017 and elapsed for about four years. Based on this mass characterization and a set of specific requirements, a good quality of all accepted PMTs could be ascertained. This paper presents the performed testing procedure with the designed testing systems as well as the statistical charac…
Evidence of Single State Dominance in the Two-Neutrino Double-β Decay of ^{82}Se with CUPID-0.
2019
We report on the measurement of the two-neutrino double-β decay of ^{82}Se performed for the first time with cryogenic calorimeters, in the framework of the CUPID-0 experiment. With an exposure of 9.95 kg yr of Zn^{82}Se, we determine the two-neutrino double-β decay half-life of ^{82}Se with an unprecedented precision level, T_{1/2}^{2ν}=[8.60±0.03(stat) _{-0.13}^{+0.19}(syst)]×10^{19} yr. The very high signal-to-background ratio, along with the detailed reconstruction of the background sources allowed us to identify the single state dominance as the underlying mechanism of such a process, demonstrating that the higher state dominance hypothesis is disfavored at the level of 5.5σ.
QCD bremsstrahlung at high energy
2017
Tämän työn tavoitteena on laskea kahdella tavalla puutason differentiaalisen vaikutusalan korkeaenergiaraja jarrutussäteilyprosessille, jossa kvarkki siroaa ulkoisesta Coulombin kentästä ja emittoi gluonin. Ensin vaikutusala lasketaan käyttämällä "tavallista" perturbatiivista kvanttiväridynamiikkaa tapauksessa, jossa ulkoista kenttää vastaa sironta leptonista. Sirontaan liittyvä matriisielementti rakennetaan prosessiin liittyvistä kahdesta Feynmanin diagrammista, ja differentiaalisen vaikutusalan laskeminen tästä on suoraviivaista tavallisen hiukkasfysiikan alkeiskurssin tiedoilla. Korkeaenergiaraja saadaan poimimalla matriisielementistä vain voimakkaimmin massakeskipisteliikeemäärästä riip…
Measurement of dielectron production in central Pb-Pb collisions at √sNN = 2.76 TeV

Further distribution of this work must maintain attribution to the author(s) and the published article's title, journal citation, and DOI. The first measurement of dielectron (e + e −) production in central (0 – 10 %) Pb – Pb collisions at √sNN=2.76TeV at the LHC is presented. The dielectron invariant-mass spectrum is compared to the expected contributions from hadron decays in the invariant-mass range 0 < mee < 3.5 GeV / c2. The ratio of data and the cocktail of hadronic contributions without vacuum ρ0 is measured in the invariant-mass range 0.15 < mee < 0.7 GeV / c2, w…
Study of the neutral pion and direct photon production in Au+Au collisions at √sNN = 39-200 GeV
2013
This thesis focuses on the study of the neutral pion and eta production in the Au+Au “low-energy”collisions at √sNN = 39 and 62.4 GeV.The η/π0 ratio was reconstructed in Au+Au minimum bias collisions at √sNN = 62.4 GeV up to pT < 7 GeV/c. The direct photons were reconstructed via the subtraction method using two different PID cuts up to pT < 10 GeV/c in Au+Au minimum bias collisions at √sNN = 62.4 GeV.
Underground investigation of extensive air showers spectra at high energy range of cosmic rays and other research in the Pyhäsalmi mine
2020
Abstract High energy particles reaching the Earth’s atmosphere are known as cosmic rays. As a result of interactions with nuclei of air molecules, cosmic rays induce showers of secondary particles, which can be divided into 3 components: electromagnetic, hadronic and muonic components. The Experiment with Multi Muon Array (EMMA), located at the depth of 75 m in the Pyhäsalmi mine in Finland, investigates the muonic component of the Extensive Air Showers (EAS) to deduce the direction, energy, and the mass of the primary cosmic ray particles. In this paper we give a concise description and methodology used by EMMA followed by a brief review of the C14 experiment. Finally, we review the feasib…
