Global, regional, and national levels and causes of maternal mortality during 1990-2013: A systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study…

2014

BACKGROUND: The fifth Millennium Development Goal (MDG 5) established the goal of a 75% reduction in the maternal mortality ratio (MMR; number of maternal deaths per 100,000 livebirths) between 1990 and 2015. We aimed to measure levels and track trends in maternal mortality, the key causes contributing to maternal death, and timing of maternal death with respect to delivery.METHODS: We used robust statistical methods including the Cause of Death Ensemble model (CODEm) to analyse a database of data for 7065 site-years and estimate the number of maternal deaths from all causes in 188 countries between 1990 and 2013. We estimated the number of pregnancy-related deaths caused by HIV on the basi…

Role of the dental surgeon in the early detection of adults with underlying HIV infection / AIDS

2011

A review is made of the late diagnosis of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection, a subject of growing interest in public health. It has been estimated that in Europe 30% of all HIV-infected people are unaware of their seropositive condition, and this in turn is associated with a poorer long-term disease prognosis and an increased risk of transmission to other individuals. The role of the dental surgeon in this context could be of great importance, since there are many oral lesions that can suggest the existence of underlying infection. The study also addresses the controversial subject of rapid HIV testing, and whether these tests should be performed on a routine basis in the dental …

the role of lipids in the pathogenesis of neuroHIV

2020

A critical comorbidity of HIV infection is HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders (HAND). Although combined antiretroviral therapy (cART) is an effective treatment in blocking systemic viral replication, it is unsuccessful in reducing the incidence of HAND. HIV CNS damage, in the current cART era, can be associated to the presence of latently HIV-infected cells including microglia/macrophages and a small population of astrocytes. This Ph.D. thesis focuses on identifying, localizing, and quantifying viral reservoirs using an improved staining and microscopy technique. Although in low amount, our data confirmed that microglia/macrophages and a small population of astrocytes are still infecte…
