Climatic and anthropogenic influences on three burgundian watercourses : geoarchaelogy of crossing sites on Loire, Saône and Doubs during the Holocene
2015
A geoarchaeological study was led on four sections of the valleys of the Loire, Saône and Doubs rivers (Burgundy, France) in order to point out the factors influencing the alluvial dynamics on a multimillennial scale, and their effects on the preservation of archaeological information. Investigations started by roman and medieval remains of bridges discovered in active channels, were then carried out on larger parts of alluvial plains, and altogether allowed the evolutions of the channels during the Holocene period to be deducted. Various types of information on alluvial characteristics were crossed through time and space: ancient maps and XXth century or aerial photographs for centennial s…
Structure and cytotoxicity of steroidal glycosides from Allium schoenoprasum
2013
Abstract A phytochemical analysis of the whole plant of Allium schoenoprasum , has led to the isolation of four spirostane-type glycosides ( 1 – 4 ), and four known steroidal saponins. Their structures were elucidated mainly by 2D NMR spectroscopic analysis and mass spectrometry as (20 S ,25 S )-spirost-5-en-3β,12β,21-triol 3- O -α- l -rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-β- d -glucopyranoside ( 1 ), (20 S ,25 S )-spirost-5-en-3β,11α,21-triol 3- O -α- l -rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-β- d -glucopyranoside ( 2 ), laxogenin 3- O -α- l -rhamnopyranosyl-(1 → 2)-[β- d -glucopyranosyl-(1 → 4)]-β- d -glucopyranoside ( 3 ), and (25 R )-5α-spirostan-3β,11α-diol 3- O -β- d -glucopyranosyl-(1 → 3)-[β- d -glucopyranosyl-…
Association between food insecurity and fall-related injury among adults aged ≥65 years in low- and middle-income countries: The role of mental healt…
2021
Purpose:\ud \ud We investigated the association between food insecurity and fall-related injury among older adults from six low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), and the extent to which this association is mediated by mental health.\ud \ud Methods:\ud \ud Cross-sectional, community-based, nationally representative data from the WHO Study on global AGEing and adult health (SAGE) were analyzed. Past 12-month food insecurity was assessed with two questions on frequency of eating less and hunger due to lack of food. Fall-related injury referred to those that occurred in the past 12 months. Multivariable logistic regression analysis and mediation analysis were conducted to assess association…
To quiver or to shiver: increased melanization benefits thermoregulation, but reduces warning signal efficacy in the wood tiger moth
2013
Melanin production is often considered costly, yet beneficial for thermoregulation. Studies of variation in melanization and the opposing selective forces that underlie its variability contribute greatly to understanding natural selection. We investigated whether melanization benefits are traded off with predation risk to promote observed local and geographical variation in the warning signal of adult male wood tiger moths ( Parasemia plantaginis ). Warning signal variation is predicted to reduce survival in aposematic species. However, in P. plantaginis , male hindwings are either yellow or white in Europe, and show continuous variation in melanized markings that cover 20 to 90 per cent o…
Victimisation and life satisfaction of gay and bisexual individuals in 44 European countries: the moderating role of country-level and person-level a…
2018
We examined the link between victimisation and life satisfaction for 85,301 gay and bisexual individuals across 44 European countries. We expected this negative link to be stronger when the internalised homonegativity of the victim was high (e.g. because the victim is more vulnerable) and weaker when victimisation occurs in countries that express intolerance towards homosexuality (e.g. because in such contexts victims expect victimisation more and they attribute it to their external environment). Additionally, we expected internalised homonegativity to relate negatively to life satisfaction. Multilevel analyses revealed that victimisation (i.e. verbal insults, threats of violence, minor or …
The Effects of Cold Exposure on Leukocytes, Hormones and Cytokines during Acute Exercise in Humans
2014
The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of exercise on total leukocyte count and subsets, as well as hormone and cytokine responses in a thermoneutral and cold environment, with and without an individualized pre-cooling protocol inducing low-intensity shivering. Nine healthy young men participated in six experimental trials wearing shorts and t-shirts. Participants exercised for 60 min on a treadmill at low (LOW: 50% of peak VO2) and moderate (MOD: 70% VO2peak) exercise intensities in a climatic chamber set at 22°C (NT), and in 0°C (COLD) with and without a pre-exercise low-intensity shivering protocol (SHIV). Core and skin temperature, heart rate and oxygen consumption were col…
Accuracy of death certificates for motor neuron disease and multiple sclerosis in the province of Palermo in southern Italy
2002
Mortality studies based on death certificates (DCs) are relatively inexpensive and easy to conduct. Therefore, they are frequently used to evaluate variations of geographical and temporal patterns, particularly in uncommon diseases. Recent surveys of motor neuron disease (MND) and multiple sclerosis (MS) based on official mortality statistics in Italy showed a decreasing trend of mortality from northern to southern Italy. To evaluate if DCs are homogeneously recorded in Italy and whether or not they can be considered a good instrument for mortality studies, we assessed the accuracy of DCs for MND and MS in the province of Palermo, Italy, and compared our results with those reported in other…
Fuel selection during short-term submaximal treadmill exercise in the cold is not affected by pre-exercise low-intensity shivering.
2014
Exercise and shivering rely on different metabolic pathways and consequently, fuel selection. The present study examined the effects of a pre-exercise low-intensity shivering protocol on fuel selection during submaximal exercise in a cold environment. Nine male subjects exercised 4 times for 60 min at 50% (LOW) or 70% (MOD) of their peak oxygen consumption on a motorized treadmill in a climatic chamber set at 0 °C with (SHIV) and without (CON) a pre-exercise cooling protocol, inducing low-intensity shivering. Thermal, cardiorespiratory and metabolic responses were measured every 15 min whereas blood samples were collected every 30 min to assess serum nonesterified fatty acids (NEFA), glyce…
Intraoperative tramadol reduces shivering but not pain after remifentanil–isoflurane general anaesthesia. A placebo-controlled, double-blind trial
2008
Background and objective Postoperative shivering and pain are frequent problems in patients recovering from anaesthesia with particularly high incidences being observed after remifentanil–isoflurane-based general anaesthesia. The opioid tramadol is generally effective in preventing shivering and treating pain, but its effects are not characterized after remifentanil-based general anaesthesia. This randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind study evaluated the effects of intraoperative intravenous tramadol on postoperative shivering and pain after remifentanil-based general anaesthesia. Methods After Ethics Committee approval, 60 patients scheduled for lumbar disc surgery were included. Su…
