Open Dialogue as a Human Rights Aligned Approach

2019

Throughout the last 20 years, the human rights perspective has increasingly developed into a paradigm against which to appraise and evaluate mental health care. This article investigates to what extent the Finnish open dialogue (OD) approach both aligns with human rights and may be qualified to strengthen compliance with human rights perspectives in global mental health care. Being a conceptual paper, the structural and therapeutic principles of OD are theoretically discussed against the background of human rights, as framed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the UN Convention on the Rights of People with Disabilities, and the two recent annual reports of the Human Rights Council…

Revisiting the bromination of 3β-hydroxycholest-5-ene with CBr4/PPh3 and the subsequent azidolysis of the resulting bromide, disparity in stereochemi…

2023

Cholesterol reacts under Appel conditions (CBr4/PPh3) to give 3,5-cholestadiene (elimination) and 3β-bromocholest-5-ene (substitution with retention of configuration). Thus, the bromination of cholesterol deviates from the stereochemistry of the standard Appel mechanism due to participation of the Δ5 π-electrons. In contrast, the subsequent azidolysis (NaN3/DMF) of 3β-bromocholest-5-ene proceeds predominantly by Walden inversion (SN2) affording 3α-azidocholest-5-ene. The structures of all relevant products were revealed by X-ray single crystal structure analyses, and the NMR data are in agreement to the reported ones. In light of these findings, we herein correct the previous stereochemical…

Daily rhythms of young children in the 24/7 economy : A comparison of children in day care and day and night care

2017

The study explored temporal variation in children’s moods and compared children in regular day care with those in day and night care in Finland. To examine variation in children’s experiences, a mobile diary was used. The participants comprised 32 young children and their parents and day care personnel. Adults evaluated children’s moods three times daily over 1 week. A clear weekday–weekend rhythm was found among children in day care, who displayed more negative moods, due to frequent hurried mornings. Children in day and night care had more irregular mood rhythms. Boys were evaluated as displaying more negative moods than girls. peerReviewed

The Profiles of Body Image Associate With Changes in Depression Among Participants in Dance Movement Therapy Group

2020

This mixed-methods study analyzed the body image quality of 143 patients with depression. The participants received a 20 × 75 min dance movement therapy (DMT) group treatment, sessions twice a week. Body Image Assessment (BIA) was the data collection tool, with pre-, post-, and 3-mos follow-up assessments. Pre-intervention body image quality characteristics were low energy and activity levels, discomfort, shame and disgust toward the body, tension in social interactions. On the BIA scores, a statistical method of Latent Profile Analysis was utilized to identify participant profiles in the data. The two identified profiles were participant with initial negative body image and participant wit…

Dance movement therapy in the treatment of depression : change in body image and mood - a clinical practice based study

2018

This dissertation includes four studies of the use of dance movement therapy (DMT) in a group form in the treatment of depression at a psychiatric outpatient clinic. DMT is based on exploring the embodied experience in the here and now in the encounter between patient(s), therapist and the dance/movement. DMT is a method to develop awareness of embodiment. This dissertation presents data from ten DMT groups, involving 62 patients who participated in and completed DMT groups during the years 2007-2013 at one psychiatric outpatient clinic. The age range of the participants was 21-61 years. To allow comparisons between DMT and treatment as usual (TAU), a control group of 12 patients was part o…

Data-Driven Interactive Multiobjective Optimization Using a Cluster-Based Surrogate in a Discrete Decision Space

2019

In this paper, a clustering based surrogate is proposed to be used in offline data-driven multiobjective optimization to reduce the size of the optimization problem in the decision space. The surrogate is combined with an interactive multiobjective optimization approach and it is applied to forest management planning with promising results. peerReviewed

Fruit and vegetable consumption among 3–5-year-old Finnish children and their parents : is there an association?

2020

This study investigated the association between the home food environment and the consumption frequency of raw and cooked vegetables, berries and fruit among 3–5-year-old children and their mothers and fathers. The target group consisted of 3–5-year-old children (N=114) attending public early childhood education and care, and their parents (N=100). Cross-sectional data were collected from the parents with questionnaires assessing the home food environment, children and parents’ vegetable, berry and fruit consumption, and food neophobia. Linear mixed-effects models and principal component analysis were used to examine the association of parental consumption and the home food environment with…

Vanhempien käsityksiä hyvästä päivähoidosta

2014

Tiivistelmä. Pietilä, Silja. 2014. Vanhempien käsityksiä hyvästä päivähoidosta. Varhaiskasvatustieteen kandidaatintutkielma. Kasvatustieteiden laitos. Jyväskylän yliopisto. 41 sivua + liitteet. Tämän tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli selvittää millaisia odotuksia päivähoidossa olevien lasten vanhemmilla on lapsensa päivähoidolle. Tätä tietoa voidaan hyödyntää kehitettäessä ja toteutettaessa varhaiskasvatusta ja päivähoitoa. Lisäksi tutkimuksessa verrattiin vanhempien tärkeinä pitämien asioiden yhteyttä varhaiskasvatussuunnitelman perusteissa määriteltyihin varhaiskasvatusta ohjaaviin sisällöllisiin orientaatioihin sekä arvioitiin kuinka vanhempien kuvauksissa on nähtävissä tavoite päivähoidon toi…
