2015
Treatment with acamprosate is a valid tool to complement psychotherapy as it does not cause addiction, abuse or withdrawal of its suspension and does not interfere with other medications that patients often alcoholics must take. To evaluate the effectiveness, our study evaluated the effects of Acamprosate compared to γ-hydroxybutyrate in clinical-physiological and social health in a way indicator of a possible therapeutic success in terms of abstinence from alcohol and social reintegration. A total of 36 patients were observed, of which 5, 4 men and 1 woman at the Drug Addiction Service (Servizio Tossicodipendenze, Ser.T) Alcamo, and 31, 21 men and 10 women at the Ser.T of Palermo. As regar…
Distinguishing Workaholism and Work Engagement through Work–Life Conflict
2018
Workaholism and work engagement are described respectively as addiction to work and passion for work, leading to significantly different outcomes in employees’ life. Nevertheless, since they seem to share some features, a useful distinction could be reached by focusing on work–life balance levels of workaholics and engaged workers. The study was carried out by assessing levels of workaholism, work engagement and work–life conflict (work-to-life and life-to-work conflict) of 212 subjects, who completed a questionnaire. Data were analyzed through correlational strategy and structural equation modeling method. As hypothesized, workaholism and work–life conflict showed a positive relationship, …
Academic Workload, Well-Being and Workaholism in Italian Universities
2017
As suggested by Romainville (1996), universities are the only organizations focussed on dual core functions of knowledge creation and knowledge transmission through the processes of research and teaching. University academic staff do complex work in an increasingly demanding environment, so the workaholism risk seems to be higher than in other professions. Although this type of work behavior seems to be culturally approved by the academic community, it constitutes an element of risk for the health and well being of those who have chosen this type of profession on the basis of different expectations, especially in pace, amount, and independence at work. A very interesting line of research (w…
Biomarkers to disclose recent intake of alcohol: potential of 5-hydroxytryptophol glucuronide testing using new direct UPLC-tandem MS and ELISA metho…
2007
Aims: This study compared two new methods for direct determination of 5-hydroxytryptophol glucuronide (GTOL) in urine, a biomarker for detection of recent alcohol consumption. Methods: Urine samples were collected from ten alcoholic patients during recovery from intoxication. A direct injection ultra-performance liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS) method for measurement of the urinary GTOL to 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA) ratio, and an ELISA assay for direct measurement of GTOL, were used. Comparison was made with the urinary ethanol and ethyl glucuronide (EtG) concentrations. Results: The breath ethanol concentration on admission ranged between 1.0-3.1 g/l. Th…
A multi-methodology and sustainability-supporting framework for implementation and assessment of a holistic building renovation
General Systems Theory and Systems Biology
2015
We should not imagine that Systems Biology was born yesterday, indeed von Bertalanffy was a well-known supporter of the need to approach biological entities from the notion of a system. There is a tradition, dating back to early times, calling for the study of living things as a whole. Holism is no stranger to modern Systems Biology and, likewise, von Bertalanffy supported the quantitative study of the whole from the interaction of its parts.

Johtajien työholismin pysyvyys ja yhteys työhyvinvointiin
2016
