In this paper the author intends to analyze the concept of ‘waiting time’ that, in a different way, also seen the substantial artistic diversity, is present in the film Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, 2007, based on the namesake graphic novel written by the French-Iranian director in 2000, and in the novel Landschaften einer fernen Mutter written by the German-Iranian author SAID, 2001. The analysis that is conducted here wants to investigate how both, in the film and in the literary work, the ‘waiting time’ for the exile takes on totally personal connotations, becoming also not only part of the life of Satrapi and SAID, but above all a state of mind.

This chapter traces the transnational journey of Philippine anthropologist Felipe Landa Jocano from the 1950s to the 1970s. Jocano was part of a group of Philippine social scientists who earned their post-graduate degrees at the University of Chicago after the Philippines became independent from the US. One of the pre-eminent scholars in the Philippines, Jocano’s professional and intellectual journey unfolded against the backdrop of the Cold War and decolonization. Driven by various motives, Latvian emigrants and exiles have been voluntarily or involuntarily choosing various regions of the world as their new home. Siberia is one such region – the first Latvian exiles were deported to this remote Russian territory already in the 18th century and a new wave of settlers moved there on their own accord in search of a better life in the early 19th century. Some of the Latvian villages have survived in Russia to this day. Augšbebri (Bobrovka) village in the Tara district, Omsk region, is one of them.
