“My Lies and Liaisons with Marilyn” : An Autofictional Representation of the Downtown Man, a Finnish Successor to the Marlboro Man in the Early 1990s
2022
In this autobiographical/autofictional article, I analyze the representation of masculinity, an advertising poster for a new Finnish cigarette brand from the 1990s recession, when a new man, a “softie,” debuted under the pressure of the traditional male model and the twenty-first-century dudes and lads. The model posing in the poster is a homosexual, me. In the article I ask whether a gay could represent a Finnish man in the early 1990s or only present him. I examine the picture with a queer eye in search of inconsistencies and distortions that break present alternative interpretations to heteronormativity.

Homo- ja biseksuaalisen tyttöyden representaatiot Siiri Enorannan Surunhauras, lasinterävä ja Maria Turtschaninoffin Anaché: Myter från akkade -fant…

Tarkastelen maisterintutkielmassani lähiluvun keinoin kahdessa kotimaisessa nuorten fantasiatyttöromaanissa, Siiri Enorannan teoksessa Surunhauras, lasinterävä (2015) sekä Maria Turtschaninoffin teoksessa Anaché: Myter från akkade (2012), esiintyviä heteronormista poikkeavan tyttöyden representaatioita. Erityisesti huomioni kiinnittyy pohjoismaiseen lasten- ja nuortenkirjallisuuteen rakentuneeseen vahvan tyttöyden perinteeseen (mm. Österlund 2011, 217, 236), joka on selkeästi näkyvissä myös kohdeteoksissani – analyysini perustana on tarkastella, millä tavalla vahvan tyttöyden perinne kiinnittyy ja näyttäytyy kohdeteosteni kuvaamien heteronormista poikkeavien tyttöhahmojen esityksissä. Tutki…
Korpusavusteinen diskurssintutkimus (CADS): analyysiesimerkki homouden ja heterouden digitaalisista diskursseista
2018
The article aims at combining two methodological approaches, namely corpus linguistics and discourse studies. Both of these approaches are present in corpus-assisted discourse studies (CADS) which makes use of both quantitative and qualitative methodologies. First, an attempt is made to discuss the differences and similarities of these two traditions based on Leech’s (2000) listing. However, it turns out that this listing does not include all necessary viewpoints, and those are further discussed. In the empirical section of the paper, the Suomi24 corpus is analysed in order to provide an example of CADS. The analysis was carried out through collocation and discourse prosody analyses. The re…
The Intersections of Sexuality and Religion in the Anti-Interculturalist Rhetoric in Finnish Internet Discussion on Muslim Homosexuals in Amsterdam
2014
In recent decades, Europe has faced the rise of nationalist populist movements objecting to increased immigration, cultural pluralisation, and interculturalism in European societies. Public discussion on interculturalism have often focused on the encounters of – and the wrangles with – migrants and local people and their diverse values. The members of anti-immigrant movements commonly object to cultural pluralism and intercultural practices and foster ‘traditional’, ‘Western’, and ‘national’ values. The discourse influenced by conservative ideologies also often embraces traces of xenophobia, homophobia, and misogyny. In this paper, we ask how and why interculturalism is opposed in populist …

“Sexuality does not belong to the game” : Discourses in Overwatch Community and the Privilege of Belonging
2022
Players can experience a sense of belonging to videogames and the transmedial worlds surrounding them. There nevertheless exist ongoing negotiations over who has the right to belong to these spaces. Multiple works addressing related issues have highlighted that white heterosexual men still maintain the position of power in the majority of game communities (e.g., Consalvo, 2012; Paul, 2018). This position can translate into an ease of belonging while others can find themselves struggling for the right to belong. We examine the transmedial world of Overwatch, an online game, as a place of belonging and non-belonging. Since the game’s launch, two characters have been revealed as queer. In cont…
