‘Communication breakdown’: the evolution of signal unreliability and deception
2014
For a signalling system to be stable, signals must confer net fitness benefits to senders and receivers, which means that some aspect of their design must correlate with a quality that receivers benefit from knowing about. However, examples abound where this correlation is complicated by phenomena commonly referred to as deception and/or signal unreliability. We argue here that unreliability and deception are notions marred with conceptual ambiguities, often used as equivalent or as catch-all terms for qualitatively different processes. Signal unreliability refers to a pattern of design–information dissociation that can arise through different processes, some deceptive and some not, with di…
Ethical relationship in the dentist-patient interaction
2021
Background In recent times the deontology of the dental profession has acquired special relevance as a result of problems that dentists have had to face to resolve ethical conflicts. Material and methods Information on deontology in the dental profession has been compiled in publications of health sciences in general and specific codes for dentistry, while expressing opinions about the experience of the authors themselves who, from a humanistic and health overview are concentrated in the dental area. Results This article presents our point of view of how the dentist-patient relationship should be in the face of current demands from patients and society, with a focus on the crucial role of e…
Psychophysiological differentiation of deception: the effects of electrodermal lability and mode of responding on skin conductance and heart rate
2001
The differentiation-of-deception paradigm enables the examination of deception as a psychophysiological process by varying, within subjects, two conditions which differ only with respect to honesty and deception. The present experiment assessed the effects of two group factors - electrodermal lability and mode of responding - on the deception phenomenon in a situation with low emotional involvement and mental load. Skin conductance responses, phasic heart rate, self-rated relaxation, calmness, and concentration were the dependent variables. Twenty questions referring to general knowledge were presented on a monitor. The 88 male participants answered half of the questions deceptively and the…
Supporting Dispute Handling in E-Commerce Transactions, a Framework and Related Methodologies
2004
An E-commerce transaction is a means to conduct particular commercial activities using the global digital E-commerce infrastructure. We concentrate here on business to customer (B-to-C) E-commerce transactions. These transactions are based on protocols offered by the global infrastructure, primarily the Internet. Using electronic means to do business can greatly improve the efficiency of the business transactions. It, however, poses some problems that were rarely considered to be important before. One class of problems is caused by the behavior of untrusted participants. For reasons such as dishonesty, disputes may arise. In the general case, when a dispute arises an untrustworthy participa…

A Study of Computer Science Students' Ethical Attitudes and Its Implications to
2003
In this study I investigated 198 Finnish computer science students' attitudes concerning computer usage and professional practic e in computing to determine content for computer ethics education. Students were to analyse acceptability of individuals' behavi our in 23 cases. It is postulated that divergence of attitudes in cases lead students to present opposing viewpoints during smal l group discussions and thus to develop moral sensitivity and judgment in students. The following issues emerged in this study: cracking to computer systems, using a database of an employer for one's own purposes, honesty in client relationships, acknowled ging someone's contribution, keeping software without p…
2018
Children's and young people's literature has been used as an instrument to transmit behaviors and values throughout history. Through illustrated magazines and the press, an increasing number of readers were receiving this type of informal education through stories and children's stories in which the protagonists were children with whom the reader could easily identify. The objective of this article is to analyze the stories and children's stories published in the decennial magazine El Mundo de los Niños –The World of Children– (1887-1891), to make an approximation to Spanish society at the end of the 19th century and its values. The method used was the content analysis, in which grouped by …
