The ‘cornuti Finni’ mentioned in the <em>Historia Norwegiae</em> have not found their explanation, because the Latin word <em>cornu</em>, from which the adjective is derived, has been understood in the strict sense of ‘horn on the head’. The Latin word, however, also means ‘hoof’ of horses or ‘cloven hoof’ of cows and goats, even of the mythologic Faunus and Pan. Vector Bundles and Torsion Free Sheaves on Degenerations of Elliptic Curves

In this paper we give a survey about the classification of vector bundles and torsion free sheaves on degenerations of elliptic curves. Coherent sheaves on singular curves of arithmetic genus one can be studied using the technique of matrix problems or via Fourier-Mukai transforms, both methods are discussed here. Moreover, we include new proofs of some classical results about vector bundles on elliptic curves.

Subleading Regge limit from a soft anomalous dimension

Wilson lines capture important features of scattering amplitudes, for example soft effects relevant for infrared divergences, and the Regge limit. Beyond the leading power approximation, corrections to the eikonal picture have to be taken into account. In this paper, we study such corrections in a model of massive scattering amplitudes in N = 4 super Yang-Mills, in the planar limit, where the mass is generated through a Higgs mechanism. Using known three-loop analytic expressions for the scattering amplitude, we find that the first power suppressed term has a very simple form, equal to a single power law. Quittor, an obsolete disease

Quittor was a disease of the pastern and crown area of the ungulates. It was quite common in the horse until the early twentieth century. It was characterized by necrosis manifested by a mass, outward symptom of a phlegmon, which ulcerated and expelled necrotic tissue. The hippiatric healers and early veterinarians generally recognized four forms, the most dangerous was the necrosis of fibrocartilages of the foot. Treatment involved excision of the latter which involved a spectacular operating manual. Wilson Loop Form Factors: A New Duality

We find a new duality for form factors of lightlike Wilson loops in planar $\mathcal N=4$ super-Yang-Mills theory. The duality maps a form factor involving an $n$-sided lightlike polygonal super-Wilson loop together with $m$ external on-shell states, to the same type of object but with the edges of the Wilson loop and the external states swapping roles. This relation can essentially be seen graphically in Lorentz harmonic chiral (LHC) superspace where it is equivalent to planar graph duality. Matter dependence of the four-loop QCD cusp anomalous dimension: from small angles to all angles

We compute the fermionic contributions to the cusp anomalous dimension in QCD at four loops as an expansion for small cusp angle. As a byproduct we also obtain the respective terms of the four-loop HQET wave function anomalous dimension. Our new results at small angles provide stringent tests of a recent conjecture for the exact angle dependence of the matter terms in the four-loop cusp anomalous dimension. We find that the conjecture does not hold for two of the seven fermionic color structures, but passes all tests for the remaining terms. On the rigidity theorem for elliptic genera

We give a detailed proof of the rigidity theorem for elliptic gen- era. Using the Lefschetz fixed point formula we carefully analyze the relation between the characteristic power series defining the elliptic genera and the equivariant elliptic genera. We show that equivariant elliptic genera converge to Jacobi functions which are holomorphic. This implies the rigidity of elliptic genera. Our approach can be easily modified to give a proof of the rigidity theorem for the elliptic genera of level N.
