Overlapping Regionalism and Security Cooperation: Power-Based Explanations of Nigeria's Forum-Shopping in the Fight against Boko Haram
2019
AbstractRegional conflicts increasingly require multilevel efforts by regional, subregional, and international actors. When states are confronted with a cooperation problem, often there are several institutions available to address this issue. Drawing on the literature of overlapping regionalism and forum-shopping, we argue that existing explanatory models benefit from adding power-based explanations. By conceptualizing an issue-specific dimension and factors specific to the national environment as additional power-based criteria for forum-shopping, we expand the existing literature. Applying our framework to the response to the Boko Haram uprising, our study examines why Nigeria preferred …
Shopping malls as pseudo-public spaces. The shopping mall as an emergent public space in Palermo
2012
Much has been written on the role of public space in contemporary societies, and many scholars agree that public space today is a controversial and arguably critical concept. It may actually seem that even the basic idea of what is or should be ‘public’ is experiencing a deep and troublesome reconsideration, as new forms of privatization slowly but firmly erode its fundaments. Within this conceptual framework, this paper aims at critically analyzing the idea of public space today, with particular attention to the idea of public space as a shopping mall. Characteristics of the Italian way of using shopping malls, and their social and spatial consequences, are investigated and analyzed throug…
Optomechanical Two-Photon Hopping
2023
The hopping mechanism plays a key role in collective phenomena emerging in many-body physics. The ability to create and control systems that display this feature is important for next generation quantum technologies. Here we study two cavities separated by a vibrating two-sided perfect mirror and show that, within currently available experimental parameters, this system displays photon-pair hopping between the two electromagnetic resonators. In particular, the two-photon hopping is not due to tunneling, but rather to higher order resonant processes. Starting from the classical problem, where the vibrating mirror perfectly separates the two sides of the cavity, we quantize the system and the…
Characterization of Radio Frequency Echo using frequency sweeping and power analysis
2014
International audience; Coupling between repeater's antennas, called Radio Frequency Echo (RFE) deteriorates signal quality and compromises system stability. If the channel insulation is insufficient, the power in the closed-loop raises with time according to the gain margin value. Multiple methods of echo cancellation exists. Generally, these techniques are based on correlation calculation and adaptive filtering. However, their efficiency and algorithm's convergence speed are calling into question under signal's modulation and real-time constraints, specially with narrow band signals having frequency hopping as GSM or TETRA. This paper describes a real time method of RFE detection and esti…
Perceptions of convenience, risk and enjoyment in online shopping
2015
As online shopping is getting more common all the time and competition over customers increases, companies should draw attention to the customer perception of online shopping. Therefore, the present study aims to describe and understand the customer online shopping perception in every stage of the online shopping process. Online shopping has been studied earlier from the viewpoints of the ease of use and the usefulness but as the quickness and easiness of shopping have been found to be factors that motivate customers to use online stores, the customer perception of the convenience of online shop use will be investigated in the present study. In addition to the convenience, the risk and the …
Liminality and rites of passage in Guerlain’s perfumeries
2018
This research studies the process of creating the shopping experience in Guerlain’s luxury perfumeries in Paris. Our analysis focuses on the intermediate spaces accompanying the crossing of commercial boundaries, and on their appropriation by visitors, resulting in rites of passage. We analyze the shopping experience in Guerlain’s luxury perfumeries in Paris which presents many designs of stores, located in various environments. Our results show that in this context the creation of the shopping experience is a coproduction resulting from the interaction between the types of intermediate spaces delimiting the store, the ritualization of experience and the appropriation process of consumers.
Heteroaromatic Inhibitors of the Astacin Proteinases Meprin α, Meprin β and Ovastacin Discovered by a Scaffold-Hopping Approach.
2020
Abstract Astacin metalloproteinases, in particular meprins α and β, as well as ovastacin, are emerging drug targets. Drug‐discovery efforts have led to the development of the first potent and selective inhibitors in the last few years. However, the most recent compounds are based on a highly flexible tertiary amine scaffold that could cause metabolic liabilities or decreased potency due to the entropic penalty upon binding to the target. Thus, the aim of this study was to discover novel conformationally constrained scaffolds as starting points for further inhibitor optimization. Shifting from flexible tertiary amines to rigid heteroaromatic cores resulted in a boost in inhibitory activity. …
Measuring Repurchase Intention on Fashion Online Shopping
2020
The internet has become one of many ways for consumers to shop. With the rapid development of internet connection, online shopping has become increasingly popular around the world. All forms of conveniences available through online businesses have lured consumers to switch from offline shopping to online slowly. This research emphasizes the influence of e-service convenience on customer satisfaction, perceived service value, and repurchase intention on fashion online shopping websites in Surabaya. The sample is taken from 115 Surabaya respondents. The sampling technique uses a non-random sampling technique. The analytical method used is the partial least square (PLS). The results show that …
Accessibility urban and central business
2012
The structures and facilities of large dimensions, such as shopping malls centers and leisure facilities are an important component in the expansion of contemporary cities and urban planning. Urban planning and transport have to be involved in the strategic role of policy related to business planning, this is the aim the city has to requalify the suburbs and large marginal areas. This study analyzes the characteristics and the dynamics that influence the mobility demand and the impact that these greet attractors have on mobility itself.
Energy Saving Optimizing the Ventilation Control in a Big Shopping Center
2018
The paper investigates the potential energy savings in the context of big shopping centers, thanks to the introduction of innovative technologies able to control the ventilation according the real requirement for comfort and health of indoor spaces. The case study analyses a big shopping center, where the ventilation is realized with a centralized air-conditioning plant, working with fixed air flows. Two solutions are proposed to reduce the energy consumption for ventilation. The first considers the installation of heat recovery exchangers, the second the introduction of a control system able to modulate the air exchange, according to the real requirements. An energetic and economic evaluat…
