Enhancement of mechanical properties of FSWed AA7075 lap joints through in-situ fabrication of MMC

2017

Abstract Friction Stir Processing (FSP) has been demonstrated feasible to create local Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) in light alloys matrix. In this research, local MMCs were produced contextually to the weld using Friction Stir Welding (FSW). SiC particles were added to AA7075 lap joints by creating a proper groove on the top surface of the bottom sheet. Different welds were produced with increasing number of tool passes. The effect of the multiple passes was investigated through shear tests, macro and micro observations, average grain size and microhardness measurements. The welded joints were compared to a reference weld produced with no reinforcements. It was found that poor mixing bet…

Conceptual Key Competency Model for Smart Factories in Production Processes

2020

Abstract Background and Purpose: The aim of the study is to develop a conceptual key competency model for smart factories in production processes, focused on the automotive industry, as innovation and continuous development in this industry are at the forefront and represent the key to its long-term success. Methodology: For the purpose of the research, we used a semi-structured interview as a method of data collection. Participants were segmented into three homogeneous groups, which are industry experts, university professors and secondary education teachers, and government experts. In order to analyse the qualitative data, we used the method of content analysis. Results: Based on the anal…

The magnitude of a product recall: offshore outsourcing vs. captive offshoring effects

2018

The escalation in product recalls in recent years is attributed to the rise of globalisation and associated challenges of offshoring. Extant SCM research suggests that product recalls have a significant negative impact on financial performance, but gaps exist relative to the managerial actions to minimise their impact. Recall response strategies have become more important in the press, given that a single recall may result in the mandatory withdrawal of millions of products from the market, with firms incurring enormous logistics costs and brand damage. In this study, we address this gap in the research, and using a measure of product recall defined as the volume of products withdrawn from …

Strategies of Identification of a Base-Isolated Hospital Building by Coupled Quasi-Static and Snap-Back Tests

2020

In this paper, the description of a series of quasi-static pushing tests and dynamic snap-back tests is proposed, involving the base-isolated emergency building of the Palermo university hospital. The base isolation system is characterized by a set of double-curved friction pendulum isolators placed on the top of the columns of the underground level, characteristics that cannot be found in the experimental studies available in the literature. The aim of the work was to investigate the static and dynamic properties of the building in question and comparing the in-situ results with the characteristics assigned during the design process and to assess the level of agreement. Static lateral push…

Prediction of unfavorable outcomes in West Nile virus neuroinvasive infection - Result of a multinational ID-IRI study

2019

Background: WNV causes 1.4% of all central nervous system infections and is the most common cause of epidemic neuro-invasive disease in humans. Objectives: Our main objective was to investigate retrospectively West Nile virus neuroinvasive disease (WNND) cases hospitalized during 2010–2017 and identified factors that can influence prognosis. Study design: We documented the demographic, epidemiologic, clinical and laboratory data of WNND and identified factors that can influence prognosis. The data were recruited through Infectious Diseases International Research Initiative (ID-IRI), which serves as a network for clinical researches. Results: We investigated 165 patients with WNND in 10 coun…

Effect of Occupational Exposure on A(H1N1)pdm09 Infection and Hospitalization.

2016

OBJECTIVE To analyze relationships between occupational exposure and influenza infection and hospitalization during the 2009-2010 pandemic wave and the 2010-2011 influenza seasonal epidemic in Spain. METHODS Occupations were classified as high, medium, or low risk of influenza exposure. To assess the risk of infection, 588 outpatient cases of influenza confirmed by reverse-transcription polymerase-chain-reaction (RT-PCR) were compared with 588 outpatients without influenza symptoms. To assess the risk of hospitalization, 337 outpatient influenza cases were compared with 337 inpatient influenza cases. RESULTS The high risk of occupational exposure group was composed only of health care worke…

Smoking may increase the risk of hospitalization due to influenza.

2016

Background: Smoking may facilitate influenza virus infections and their severity. The objective was to investigate the risk of hospitalization due to influenza in Spanish smokers and ex-smokers. Methods: We carried out a multicentre, case-control study in 2011. Cases [patients a parts per thousand yen 18 years hospitalized > 24 h with real time polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR)-confirmed influenza] were selected from 29 Spanish hospitals. For each case, we selected an outpatient aged a parts per thousand yen 18 years with RT-PCR-confirmed influenza matched by age (+/- 5 years), date of hospitalization of the case (+/- 10 days) and province of residence. We collected epidemiological variabl…

Differential diagnosis of myxoid soft tissue tumors. Experience in the Clinical University Hospital of Valencia.

2018

Abstract Soft tissue tumors with myxoid components are often a diagnostic challenge for the pathologist. We retrospectively reviewed 41 cases of soft tissue tumors with myxoid components diagnosed in our center over a five-year period. The most frequent diagnoses were myxofibrosarcoma and myxoid liposarcoma, followed by low-grade fibromyxoid sarcoma, low-grade fibromyxoid tumor and myxoid neurofibroma. Other diagnoses included were extraskeletal myxoid chondrosarcoma, myxoinflammatory fibroblastic sarcoma, low-grade myxoliposarcoma, myofibrosarcoma, fibromatosis, solitary fibrous tumor, non-ossifying variant of ossifying fibromyxoid tumor and ancient neurinoma with myxoid degeneration. Candida blood stream infections observed between 2011 and 2016 in a large Italian University Hospital: A time-based retrospective analysis on epidemi…

2019

Candida bloodstream infection (BSI) represents a growing infective problem frequently associated to biofilm production due to the utilization of intravascular devices. Candida species distribution (n = 612 strains), their biofilm production and hospital antifungal drug consumption were evaluated in different wards of a tertiary care academic hospital in Italy during the years 2011–2016. In the considered time window, an increasing number of Candida BSI (p = 0.005) and of biofilm producing strains were observed (p<0.0001). Although C. albicans was the species more frequently isolated in BSI with a major biofilm production, an increased involvement of non-albicans species was reported, partic…
