CEO-TMT interaction: do tenure and age affect ambidexterity dynamism?

The aim of this study is to clarify the influence of the CEO, the top management team and their interactions on the dynamism of organisational ambidexterity. We argue that ambidexterity is a dynamic capability that enables firms to become aligned with their environment. We examine this phenomenon in the context of the current economic crisis, with particular reference to SMEs. We propose tenure and age as characteristics of business elites that help to explain ambidexterity dynamism. AbstractThe co-operative and mutual enterprise business model represents a unique type of organisation that has a dual purpose focused on both economic and social goals. For nearly two centuries it has played an important role in economic development, job creation and addressing market failures. However, despite its potential importance to economic development it has been largely ignored within the mainstream economics and management literature. This paper provides an overview of the nature of the co-operative and mutual enterprise business model and also proposes a business model framework or ‘canvas’ that can be used for research, teaching and strategic analysis.

Coordination games with asymmetric payoffs: An experimental study with intra-group communication

Abstract Two alternative modes of reasoning in coordination games are prominently discussed in the literature: level-k thinking and team reasoning. In order to differentiate between the two modes of reasoning, we experimentally investigate payoff-asymmetric coordination games using an intra-group communication design that incentivizes subjects to explain the reasoning behind their decisions. We find that the reasoning process is significantly different between games. In payoff-symmetric games, team reasoning plays an important role for coordination. Urban poverty: Measurement theory and evidence from American cities

AbstractWe characterize axiomatically a new index of urban poverty that i) captures aspects of the incidence and distribution of poverty across neighborhoods of a city, ii) is related to the Gini index and iii) is consistent with empirical evidence that living in a high poverty neighborhood is detrimental for many dimensions of residents’ well-being. Widely adopted measures of urban poverty, such as the concentrated poverty index, may violate some of the desirable properties we outline. The legal framework concerning household employment has undergone a number of changes worldwide. The 100th International Labour Conference in June 2011 was highly significant as it adopted the first international labour standards specifically for domestic workers: Convention No. 189 and the supplementing Recommendation No. 201. Interaction among employees: how does learning take place in the social communities of the workplace and how might such learning be supervised?

The purpose of the present study is to look at the senses in which everyday workplace interactions can be considered manifestations of learning at work and the ways in which such activity could be supervised. Our data consist of discussions between employees taped in two technology enterprises and three municipal youth centres, analysed from an ethnographical and an ethnomethodological perspective. The paper concludes with a discussion of how learning at work—seen as a contextual activity bound up with the work process itself and with the communities that operate within the work process—could be taken into account in the practices of fostering and supervising such learning.
